Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT from Fontodi
An international wine with a hint of Tuscany terroir
The Sangiovese grapes clearly dominates the Fontodi range, but nevertheless some international grape varieties can also be found in the vineyards around the estate in the Conca d’Oro: Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc. One of the two Fontodi wines produced from international grape varieties is Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT. The Syrah grapes come from a south-facing location around Villa Pecile, where you can spend a holiday inTuscany with a view of the vineyards, like from a picture book. If you lie here at the pool and let your eyes wander over the Conca d’Oro, the best is to do it with a glass of Syrah in your hand. Pleasantly spicy, but not too heavy, despite its international caracter, the Syrah comes along and perfectly expresses the terroir of Panzano in Chianti. After the grapes have spent three weeks in stainless steel tanks, the Syrah has about a year to mature in new and used barrels before being bottled.
Tenuta Fontodi: a winery with a worldwide reputation
Without a doubt, the Tenuta Fontodi is one of the flagships of the Chianti Classico. Not least because of the size of the winery: more than 130 hectares of land, including more than 80 hectares of vineyards, over 20 employees and a production of around 400,000 bottles of wine per year. These figures speak for themselves. Since 1968, when the Manetti family acquired the property, which sits on a hill at the gates of Panzano, it has been completely renovated. The brothers Giovanni and Marco Manetti were still young when they started planting new vineyards in the Conca d’Oro, the golden valley of Panzano in Chianti. After experimenting extensively with grape varieties, the brothers decided to plant mainly Sangiovese but also a smaller part of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc. As oenologist they engaged Franco Bernabei. Today Giovanni Manetti runs the farm alone, and his brother takes care of the terracotta business.
Organic wines of the highest quality from Chianti Classico
Fontodi is a certified organic estate, which since the beginning has no use of herbicides and pesticides. The vineyard hills, which lie in the famous shell-shaped Conca d’Oro, open up to the south like an oversized amphitheatre. The limestone marl soil is very rocky, shows slate parts and is ideally ventilated and drained. The favourable climatic conditions ensure that Sangiovese can mature perfectly. Quality all along the line. And that is what you finally taste in the wines, too: only the best grapes from a single vineyard - 100% Sangiovese - are used for the famous Flaccianello della Pieve. In terms of quantity, Chianti Classico plays a central role alongside Flaccianello - also a 100% Sangiovese. Since the vintage 2010, the Vigna del Sorbo of Fontodi is classified as Gran Selezione. Since 2012 the Vigna del Sorbo is also "solo Sangiovese." Only Syrah grapes are used for the Syrah Case Via. Despite the international variety - wine connoisseurs agree - this red wine expresses the terroir perfectly. One of the rare white wines from Chianti Classico is Meriggio, which is produced 100% from Sauvignon Blanc - to the chagrin of all white wine drinkers only in very small quantities.
The two Fontodi holiday homes: a must for all wine and Tuscany lovers
A visit to Fontodi is a must for every lover of wine and Tuscany - a reservation for a guided tour of the winery is recommended. Wine cellars and wines are spectacular! And if you like it here so much that you want to stay longer, simply book a holiday in one of the two holiday homes that belong to Fontodi: Giovanna, the sister of Giovanni Manetti, runs the two as agriturismo businesses with loving hand. On the one hand there is Villa Pecille - not far from the medieval Panzano in Chianti - with a total of five apartments of different sizes. The house itself is situated amidst the vineyards in a beautiful, flowering and fragrant garden. From the pool you can enjoy an indescribable view over the Conca d’Oro. The agriturismo La Rota, located in the heart of the valley with its three apartments and a swimming pool, is the perfect place for a Tuscany holiday for discoverers and connoisseurs.
Fontodi

What other people think about 2009 Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT from Fontodi ...

L'Espresso | |
Robert Parker | 91 points "The 2009 Syrah caresses the palate with generous blueberries, blackberries and French oak. There isn’t much varietal character or nuance here, instead the wine impresses for its silky tannins and creamy, expansive finish. Today the 2009 is all about fruit. With time in the glass, some hints of varietal character come through, but this remains a relatively soft, fruit driven vintage for the Syrah. It will be interesting to see if the full range of varietal notes develops." |
Wine Spectator | 92 points "Graphite and iron notes combine with black currant and violet aromas and flavors in this beefy red, underscored by assertive, rustic tannins that leave a firm, drying impression on the finish." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Fermented in tank with indigenous yeasts. 12 months in French oak, 50% new. Deep garmet, still looks very young. Dark and peppery but with a Tuscan meaty quality and, remarkably, a floral note. Really fragrant. Chewy texture but refined and mouth-watering even with its savoury, dark Syrah character. Dry yet supple and really elegant. Still a long way to go though it's harmonious and delicious now." (JH) |
James Suckling | 92 points "This is a full-bodied wine with lots of chewy tannins and plenty of blueberry and currant character. Long and intense. Dense and fascinating. Give it a year or two to soften." |

Falstaff | 92 points "Sattes, leuchtendes Rubinviolett. Sehr satte und fruchtige Nase, nach Holunderbeeren und Kardamom, einladend und klar. Am Gaumen viel griffiges, dichtes Tannin, satter Druck, cremig, im Finale feiner Schmelz, langer Nachhall." |
What other people think about 2006 Case Via Syrah Colli Toscana Centrale IGT from Fontodi ...
Robert Parker | 94 points "The 2006 Syrah is a big, massive effort loaded with dark fruit, tar, licorice, earthiness and game. This is a decidedly powerful, intense wine that needs some time in the glass for the varietal notes to fully emerge. Today the wine remains very young, and the oak needs some time to integrate, but all of the ingredients are there for the 2006 Syrah to develop into a splendid wine in a few years’ time. The wine’s balance is impeccable." |
Wine Spectator | 95 points "Offers gorgeous grilled meat, ripe fruit and light toasty oak character, with hints of new oak and spices. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins, fresh acidity and a flavorful finish." – JS |
