Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG from Fontodi
A Gran Selezione with a moving story
The Vigna del Sorbo has had a moving story behind it : until the 2009 vintage it was classified as Chianti Classico Riserva and only since the 2010 vintage is the wine Vigna del Sorbo classified as a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. However until 2011 it was produced from 90 per cent Sangiovese and 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. And since the 2012 vintage only Sangiovese grapes have been used for the Vigna del Sorbo. Today, Fontodi has a total of three wines from 100 per cent Sangiovese in its range - in addition to the Vigna del Sorbo, the super star Flaccianello and of course the Evergreen, the Chianti Classico. The grapes for the Vigna del Sorbo come from a single vineyard with a south-western orientation that have exceeded the proud age of 40 years. After harvesting the grapes by hand, they undergo a three-week fermentation process in temperature-controlled steel tanks. Then the wine is allowed to rest and mature for 24 months in new and used Troncais and Allier barrels. Ruby red in the glass and earthy in the nose, then forest fruit aromas in the mouth make you want more and more from the Vigna del Sorbo.
Red and white - the world’s most beautiful color combination for wine drinkers
In addition to the Gran Selezione, Fontodi also has two other red wines in its range, which are also pure Sangiovese wines. First of course is the Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT, famous far beyond the borders of Italy, which was voted one of the top 10 wines in the world by the American wine magazine "Wine Spectator". On a second place is the Chianti Classico from one hundred per cent Sangiovese, which accounts for the lion’s share of Fontodi production. The clear opposite to these wines is the Syrah Case Via, which is a pure international wine. Despite the international grape variety, you can taste perfectly the terroir of Panzano in Chianti. Fontodi also produces a white wine - Meriggio, one of the rare white wines from Chianti Classico. The Sauvignon Blanc grapes come from the vineyards near Villa La Rota, where you can also enjoy an excellent holiday. Unfortunately, only a very small quantity of this white wine is produced.
Tenuta Fontodi: a vineyard in the Chianti Classico in the course of time
The Fontodi winery is enthroned on a single hill at the gates of Panzano in Chianti. In 1968, the Manetti family acquired Tenuta Fontodi. At that time the brothers Giovanni and Marco Manetti were still young. After experimenting extensively with grape varieties they decided to plant mainly Sangiovese but also a smaller proportion of international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc. At the winery happened a lot as well, in addition to the replanting of the vineyards. The experienced oenologist Franco Bernabei was engaged as a consultant, the wine cellar was expanded, the cultivated areas were expanded and the biodynamic principles were intensified. Today Giovanni Manetti runs the winery on his own, his brother takes care of the terracotta business. And Tenuta Fontodi is one of the largest companies in Chianti Classico. More than 130 hectares of land, including more than 80 hectares of vineyards, over 20 employees and a production of around 400,000 bottles of wine per year - these figures speak for themselves.
Organic & sustainability for best wine quality
Since 2003 the vineyards of Fontodi have been cultivated according to organic principles and the winery is officially certified as an organic farm. Giovanni Manetti, the owner of Fontodi, is very concerned about the natural cultivation of the vineyards. He was also the one who initiated the project "Panzano sostenibile" - i.e. "sustainable Panzano". The idea behind it is that organic farming works best when the neighbour follows the same principles. Then nature and man will benefit the most. In the meantime, the majority of the winegrowers in Panzano are relying on organic, sustainable cultivation - the international wine press even elevated Panzano to the "No. 1 organic district in Italy". Other quality factors for the Fontodi wines are of course the terroir, i.e. the sites where the vines grow and the grapes ripen, or the ideal "Galestro" soil for Sangiovese. All these conditions ensure that the Sangiovese grapes in the Conca d’Oro ripen perfectly while retaining their freshness, acidity and structure. Of course together with the Sangiovese the international grape varieties also find the best conditions.

Fontodi

Wine Spectator | 92 points "An opulent, fruity style, boasting black cherry, blueberry and spice flavors, accented by tobacco and earth details. This needs time to find equilibrium and stretch out on the complex finish. Best from 2017 through 2026. 3,800 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 16 points "100% Sangiovese. 24 months in French oak barriques. Dark crimson. Very intense nose – smells fully ripe. Edgy chestnut notes with good acidity and lots of tannin. A very good 2012 but not sublime." (WS) |
James Suckling | 95 points "A red with blueberry, blackberry and hints of flower on the nose and palate. Full body, firm and silky tannins and a crisp finish. Elegance with depth, yet structured and solid. Better in 2017." |
Vinous | 98 points "The 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is stunningly beautiful. At the same time, I have to report that the window for tasting the 2012 as a young wine appears to be closing. The density of the fruit and creaminess of the tannins are still evident if somewhat less obvious than they were a year ago, while the aromatics aren't quite as explosive as they have been in the past. The wine's depth and intensity suggest the 2012 will be fabulous once it emerges from its current period of dormancy. In this tasting, the 2012 shows a more red fruit and lifted profile than the 2013, where the flavors are darker." - Antonio Galloni |

Robert Parker | 94 points "The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is impressive. The overtness of the year is nicely balanced by the inherent freshness and acidity of Sangiovese. Hints of tobacco, cedar, licorice and spices are layered into the insistent finish. This is a terrific showing. I very much like the energy, length and focus of the fruit. I can’t wait to see how this develops over the coming years. The Vigna del Sorbo is a bit overlooked in the Fontodi stable, but it is often striking, especially after a few years in bottle. This historic vineyard is planted to 90% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sorbo has an element of freshness that the Flaccianello doesn’t have. I will not be surprised if over time it enjoys a more gradual and finessed evolution in bottle." |
Wine Spectator | 90 points "A dense, almost chunky red, sporting cherry, leather, soy and earth notes. Though firm, with dusty tannins, there's ample fruit for balance. Fresh finish. Best from 2014 through 2022. 1,200 cases made." – BS |
James Suckling | 95 points "Big and rich style with velvety tannins and lots of berry, chocolate and vanilla character. Juicy wine. Always one of the best riserva Chiantis out there. Great now but even better with a little more bottle age." |
Vinous | 95 points "Super-ripe red cherries, plums, cloves, licorice and mint wrap around the palate as the 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo. A flashy, voluptuous wine, the 2009 reflects the overt, flashy style of the year in spades. The 2009 is a relatively rich, intense Sorbo, but all the elements are in place. Here, too, the tannin is quite a bit more finessed than in the Flaccianello. Even with all of its ripeness and volume, the 2009 maintains gorgeous minerality and vibrancy. A rich, resonant finish rounds things out in style." - Antonio Galloni |
Falstaff | 93 points "Kraftvolles, sattes Rubin.

Robert Parker | 93 points "The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo is beautiful in this vintage. It shows gorgeous mid-palate depth and pliancy, with wonderful richness in its sweet dark fruit, smoke, licorice and grilled herbs. The 10% Cabernet Sauvignon works particularly well in this vintage, as it seems to give the wine a measure of depth and delineation that is less obvious in the Flaccianello. Higher toned floral notes add lift on the finish. The Vigna del Sorbo is a touch restrained in 2008, as are most wines, yet it shows fabulous balance and tons of personality." |
Wine Spectator | 90 points "Very polished, with sweet spices accenting the cherry and black currant notes. Turns firm and lean, with dry tannins taking over on the finish. Rich and dense, so be patient. Best from 2013 through 2020. 1,600 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Greve in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Concentrated ruby just beginning to show some age. Ethereal and slightly dusty. Richly extracted with a good pinch of acidity. Stalky persistent tannin. This will need some time to shed its youthful fruit." (WS) |
James Suckling | 94 points "Lots of blueberry and vanilla character in this rich and balanced Chianti Classico. Full body, with velvety tannins and a long finish. Try it in 2012 to let it come together more in the bottle. This single vineyard Chianti Classico Riserva from Fontodi is always a killer." |
Vinous | 96 points "Dark cherry, plum, graphite and savory herb notes flesh out in the 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Vigna del Sorbo. Here the greater presence of Cabernet Sauvignon versus the earlier vintages in the tasting is clearly felt in the wine's structure, depth and pure power. Cassis, mint and layers of black fruit inform the finish. The 2008 is going to require a few more years in bottle but it is striking, even today. Over the last two years, the 2008 has developed beautifully. The fruit has begun to blossom, giving the 2008 a sense of mid-palate pliancy that was missing when the wine was first released." - Antonio Galloni |
Falstaff | 93 points "Sattes, funkelndes Rubin. Dichte und kompakte Nase, eröffnet mit Noten nach Tabak, dann etwas dunkle Johannisbeere und Brombeere, im Hintergrund nach Kardamom. Offen und geschmeidig in Ansatz und Verlauf, zeigt viel reife Beerenfrucht, öffnet sich mit kernigem, zupackendem Tannin, im Finale herzhaft und fest." |
