Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG from Gagliole
The classic red with the red rose
A Chianti Classico is of course a must for a winery in Tuscany. And a glass here in Gagliole from the wine with the resounding name Rubiolo makes the heart of red wine lovers beat faster. 90 per cent from Sangiovese and 10 per cent from Merlot, this Rubiolo ensures a soft, fruity, pleasant drinking pleasure with sweet and harmonious tannins. How does it happen? The grapes coming both from the vineyards in Castellina in Chianti and from the vineyards around La Valletta in Panzano in Chianti, are vinified and matured in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels: 70 per cent in used oak barrels and 30 per cent in stainless steel containers. Then the wine undergoes at least another three months of bottle ripening. But the first thing that really catches the eye about Rubiolo is the red rose on the label: it is a homage to a very special rose that grows in the garden of the Bär-Bettschart family at Gagliole, but also to the many roses that bloom and smell everywhere at Gagliole and La Valetta. And for the lucky ones, La Valetta offers a glass of wine with a piece of cheese and homemade rose marmalade - an incomparable pleasure.
Antico Podere Gagliole in Castellina - in the heart of Chianti Classico
In 1990, the Swiss couple Monika and Thomas Bär-Bettschart acquired the Antico Podere Gagliole winery in Castellina in Chianti. Why did exactly this Swiss couple buy the estate? That is easy to explain: Monika felt in love with the historic manor house and the surrounding countryside during a holiday in Castellina years before she felt in love with her future husband… And they bought the property a few years after their marriage. In the beginning the couple leased the vineyards to the surrounding wineries. But 10 years ago the two of them decided to work as winegrowers with the support of a professional team. And that is not everything: in 2011 Thomas Bär expanded the winery and included the La Valletta estate in Panzano in Chianti. A total of 20 hectares of vineyards now belong to the Gagliole Winery, all of which are managed sustainably.
Best of Tuscany: Gagliole in Castellina & La Valletta in Panzano
Ten of the 20 hectares of land at Gagliole are located around the La Valletta estate in Panzano in Chianti. The locations here are at the upper northwestern edge of the famous Conca d’Oro - the golden valley. This is an ideal microclimate for the vines. La Valletta is by the way the perfect place to spend your holidays. The property has been lovingly restored. Every single room has its own character and makes the heart of holiday seekers beat faster. But the absolute highlight - in the true sense of the word - is the pool, surrounded by vineyards, enhanced by fragrant rose bushes that offer an incomparable view over the golden valley… The Antico Podere Gagliole estate is located near the village of Castellina - on cypress lined hills. What immediately catches the visitor’s eye are the terraces on which the vines grow – and, in between, olive trees and numerous rose bushes. Thus the trees provide shade for the sensitive vines and the biological balance is guaranteed.
Three parts of the power of pleasure: red wine, white wine and olio from Gagliole
With an ideal mixture of Swiss precision, Tuscan tradition and a lot of love, here at Gagliole are produced perfect red wines. First of all the Chianti Classico with the name Rubiolo - consisting of 90 per cent Sangiovese and 10 per cent Merlot. In addition the Valletta Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT is made from Sangiovese grapes and Merlot grapes. Another red wine in the range is Gagliole Toscana IGT, which grapes come from La Valletta in Panzano - 90 per cent Sangiovese and 10 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon. The Pecchia Colli della Toscana Centrale IGT, the 100% Sangiovese from Panzano, is produced using the "Vinificazione Integrale" method, and only during the best vintages, and is certainly a highlight among the red wines. White wines are rather unusual for Chianti Classico, but Gagliole can offer two of them: on the one hand the light, fruity Biancolo and on the other hand the stronger Il Bianco. The product range is completed by an excellent Olio Extra Vergine, which is pressed in the company’s own mill.

Antico Podere Gagliole in Castellina: Ein italienisches Stück vom Paradies

What other people think about 2015 Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG from Gagliole ...
Robert Parker | 90 points "This is one of the great value wines from Central Italy. The 2015 Chianti Classico Rubiolo is a vibrant expression of Sangiovese that shows the tonic and vibrant energy of the grape. The bouquet is polished and clean with summer fresh cherry, dark fruit and grilled herb. I suggest buying this wine in bulk for those happy moments when you are cooking behind the stove or outdoor grill. This is a fantastic food-prep Tuscan red." |
Jancis Robinson | 15,5 points "Cask sample. Castellina in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. Just mid crimson. sweet and fresh raspberry nose and quite jammy raspberry fruit on the palate. Loads of acidity and powdery tannins to offset the fruit sweetness. A little rustic. Ready now." (WS) |
James Suckling | 92 points "A full and chewy Chianti Classico with plenty of blackberry and black cherry character. Hints of flowers. Medium body, round and chewy tannins and a fresh finish. Drink now." |
What other people think about 2014 Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG from Gagliole ...
Veronelli | 87 points / |
Robert Parker | 87 points "If the name Rubiolo is meant to suggest a color, the 2014 Chianti Classico Rubiolo does indeed deliver a beautiful ruby hue. The wine’s appearance is bright and buoyant with pretty garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is sharp and slightly raw with cherry cola and white cherry. This is a simple and strongly acidic wine." |
Jancis Robinson | 15 points "Castellina in Chianti. 90% Sangiovese, 10% Merlot. Mid crimson. Peppery cherry nose and light, peppery red fruit on the palate. A little fleeting on the finish and with little persistence." (WS) |
James Suckling | 91 points "Aromas of green olives with rosemary and tar. Full and super juicy with lots of red fruit-driven flavors and a flavorful finish. Drink now." |
Vinous | 90 points "The 2014 Chianti Classico Rubiolo is an absolutely gorgeous wine for the vintage. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of bright red cherry and raspberry fruit. Light on its feet yet pliant and expressive, the 2014 is impeccable from start to finish. A dollop of Merlot adds just enough richness to compensate for the slender personality of the year. This is very nicely done." - Antonio Galloni |
What other people think about 2013 Rubiolo Chianti Classico DOCG from Gagliole ...
Veronelli | 87 points / |
Robert Parker | 91 points "The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo offers a pure core of bright cherry fruit with cherry liqueur and candied cherry for added intensity. Besides that very obvious cherry theme, the bouquet makes room for added spice, leather and polished mineral. Rubiolo offers a very elegant and clean presentation for those who enjoy the bright flavors and crisp nuances of Chianti Classico." |
Jancis Robinson | 14,5 points "Castellina in Chianti. Mid ruby. A little stalky on the nose, and quite sweet. Unfocused, and a little grubby and astringent on the finish." (WS) |
James Suckling | 92 points "A red with raspberry, black pepper and lemon rind character. Medium to full body, firm tannins and a fresh finish. Beautiful density of fruit here. Best Rubiolo ever." |
Vinous | 91 points "The 2013 Chianti Classico Rubiolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine from Gagliole. Soft, fleshy and expressive, the 2013 hits all the right notes, with vibrant red cherry fruit and fabulous balance. Silky tannins add to an impression of finesse, while attractive floral and spiced notes give the wine an attractive upper register." - Antonio Galloni |
