Il Palagio di Panzano Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG
The purple red with storage potential
Monia and Franco Piccini agree: only the conscientious manual harvest and selection can guarantee the high quality they expect from their wines. Since the 2012 vintage, only Sangiovese grapes have been used for the Riserva - these are first placed in steel tanks for 21 days for vinification and then matured in oak barrels with a capacity of 1,000 litres for two more years. This is followed by at least another six months of ageing in the bottle. In this way, a fruity bouquet of plums and - depending on the vintage - various dark berries develops with the unmistakable, gentle touch of oak wood. On the outside, the Riserva presents itself in a clear purple red in the glass with slight nuances of garnet red - some vintages even in a very dark red. And on the palate: well structured, harmonious, fresh, elegant and lasting in the finish. About 3,000 to 5,000 bottles from the Riserva are bottled per year - and the best thing to do is to stock some of them, as this wine is suitable for storage for up to 20 years.
In the heart of Chianti Classico lies the Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano. Monia Piccini took over the property from her father a few years ago, just a few kilometres from Greve in Chianti. Siena and Florence are also only a stone throw away. Today Monia and her husband Franco run the winery - both were born and raised in Panzano, so they are what we call "Panzanesi". The two Sangiovese and Merlot grapes are cultivated on around eight hectares of vineyards, which extend over the best sites in the famous Conca d’Oro, in the golden valley of Panzano. Sangiovese is the leading variety in Il Palagio di Panzano. The special geographical position in the valley ensures that the vines are pampered by the sun during the day and can relax in the coolness of the night. And the 1,200 olive trees, whose fruits are used to make a fruity, spicy olive oil.
Welcome to Italy’s organic district: 100 per cent organic, 100 per cent Panzano
About 20 years ago the winegrowers in and around Panzano joined together to form the "Unione di Viticoltori di Panzano". One of the Unione’s concerns: the establishment of biological and sustainable management of wineries. And the most winegrowers are doing that. Because only in this way, according to the same principles is possible at long term to maintain the quality and tradition of the wines. In recent years, the small town of Panzano, to which the ‘Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano’ belongs, has become a true ‘organic district’. The areas of Monia and Franco are also certified organic - officially since the 2013 vintage - but they have been committed to sustainable cultivation since 2007. The result are excellent red wines, all of which are organic. Il Palagio’s range includes a light Chianti Classico, a noble Chianti Classico Riserva, an excellent Gran Selezione "Le Bambole", a simple Ignobile and the full-bodied Torgentile. And, with the vintage 2017 - a fruity fresh Rosato as well.
Holiday at the agriturismo Il Palagio di Panzano
If you dream of a perfect holiday in Tuscany, Il Palagio di Panzano is the place for you. Not least thanks to the stone house, built in the typical Tuscan style, situated on the slopes of the golden valley of Panzano - in the so-called Conca d’Oro. After all Chianti Classico is one of the oldest wine-growing regions in the world. The property is equipped with enchanting rooms and apartments. Franco Piccini is a trained restorer who has lovingly restored many of the antique Tuscan furniture in the house. And this attention to details can be seen in every corner, in the hidden squares and courtyards, on the small, cosy terraces and in the flowering garden. And the icing on the cake for every holiday: the large pool directly in front of the house, which offers a magnificent view of the surrounding vineyards. A glass of red wine, a good book and a holiday in Tuscany is "perfetto".

Tasting notes by vintage of Il Palagio di Monia Piccini wines
2012 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Chianti Classico Riserva
2011 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Chianti Classico Riserva
This Chianti Classico Riserva clearly shows its origin in the nose. Very complex and compact, yet with aromas of cherries and sour cherries, blackberries and plums, accompanied by delicate spices, floral aromas and fine citrus notes. On the palate, these fruity, spicy and floral aromas are again to be found, fully ripe fruits and delicate flowers. Acidity and wood show, tannins are soft. All together very, very balanced. Pure Panzano with great depth. Delicate caramel notes accompany the long finish.
2010 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Chianti Classico Riserva
In the nose the aromas of dark fruits such as blueberries, black currants, fully ripe plums paired with chocolate and the spice of pepper smell. These aromas repeat themselves in the mouth, the fruits are wonderfully embedded in the compact acidity and the fine tannins. Delicate smoky notes, some dark chocolate and tea accompany this aromatic rush. Round and harmonious, strong but not ostentatious. The overall impression shows an excellent processing of Sangiovese.
2009 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Chianti Classico Riserva
Elegance is the heading of this Riserva. Spicy aromas such as pimento and juniper, smoky aromas, fully ripe plums and black currants present themselves in a wide spectrum. One notices the sun-drenched grapes of the vintage 2009, in combination with some caramel and even more plums. Full and cheerful, animating and elegant.

Jancis Robinson | 16 points "Deep ruby with bright orange tinges. Deep, herbal, chalky cherry nose. Concentrated, round fruit with a firm tannic spine. Quite drying tannins on the finish but plenty of fruit to back it up. Rustic, but genuine." (WS) |

Slow Wine | |
Jancis Robinson | 16 points "Panzano (Greve in Chianti). Concentrated ruby that is a little lacklustre. Red fruit with notes of oak. Elegant and polished with stalky tannins. Ready now, but there is still some mileage here." (WS) |
