Il Palagio di Panzano Torgentile IGT
A special red wine from the heart of Tuscany
The Torgentile IGT from the winery Il Palagio di Panzano is a non typical representative of red wines from the heart of Chianti Classico, the oldest wine-growing region in the world. This special red wine is made from Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. And although the grapes come from the Chianti Classico wine region, the wine is not classified as "Chianti Classico DOCG". This is because at least 80% of it would have to be made from Sangiovese grapes, the leading variety in Chianti Classico. But half of the Torgentile is made from Merlot, the rest is Sangiovese. It is therefore classified as ‘non typical’, which means that the IGT classification can be found on the label, i.e. marked with the geographical quality label 'Indicazione Geografica Tipica’. Important for Il Palagio di Panzano is the careful manual harvest of the grapes. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures for 24 months in 1,000 or 400 litre oak barrels. This is followed by at least six months of rest and ripening in the bottle. Once opened, a colourful bouquet of berries flows into the nose, mild tannins tickle the palate, delicate acids and a colourful berry mix again… All in all a strong and expressive red wine from Tuscany.
Tuscany in its pure culture: vineyards, red wine and olive oil - what more can you ask for…
The two "Panzanesi" Monia and Franco Piccini produce excellent red wines at their winery Il Palagio di Panzano: a typical Chianti Classico, 100% Sangiovese since the 2014 vintage, a noble Chianti Classico Riserva, with its unmistakable taste of dark berries and oak wood, and an excellent Gran Selezione with the sounding name "Le Bambole", which only entered the Il Palagio di Panzano range with the 2011 vintage. Il Palagio also produces the fresh and fruity Rosato, the simple but tasty Ignobile, a house wine to a certain extent, and the elegant Torgentile, a blend of Sangiovese and Merlot grapes. In addition to the wine, the olive oil obtained from the fruits of the 1,200 trees at the bottom of the Piccinis is Monia’s great passion. Oh, yes. "Panzanesi"? This means that Monia and Franco, the owners of the winery, were both born and raised here in Panzano, the town to which Il Palagio belongs. A 15-minute walk through the vineyards takes you from the farm to the centre of Panzano - the Piazza. A perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine and pasta in the evening and watch the hustle and bustle.
The Chianti Classico - home of top wines… and Panzano
Tuscany - especially Chianti Classico, of course - is famous for the production of excellent red wines. But Panzano, which lies in the center of this Italian wine region, has even more to offer: all of them are certified organic and are top producers of wine. Almost all the companies in the region that have joined forces in the ‘Unione di Viticoltori d i Panzano’ are sustainable or certified organic. For this reason, Panzano has been celebrated for several years in the international wine press as the "organic wine region of Italy". Since 2007, the vineyards and olive groves on Il Palagio di Panzano have been cultivated organically. In 2013, the official certification as an organic farm also took place. The vineyards of Monia and Franco extend over the famous Conca d’Oro, the golden valley, and the San Martino vineyard. Here, in this unique spot in Tuscany, amidst one of the oldest appellations in the world, the sun shines all day long on the Sangiovese and Merlot grapes of Il Palagio di Panzano. The special geographical location on the slopes of the shell-shaped basin provides ideal climatic conditions for the Sangiovese vines. Merlot grows only in very small quantities at Il Palagio di Panzano.
Longing destination Tuscany: medieval agriturismo holidays
People from all over the world travel year after year to Tuscany to spend the holidays they have always dreamed of. And if you book one of the lovingly furnished rooms or one of the spacious apartments of Monia and Franco at the "Azienda Agricola Il Palagio di Panzano", you will have drawn the big holiday lot. Because there is no better way to experience Tuscany: the medieval, typical Tuscan stone house in the middle of the vineyards is just a short walk distant from the town centre. The Agriturismo is halfway between Florence and Siena and is just a stone’s throw from Greve in Chianti. And the best way to recover from the excursions is to have a wine tasting with Monia or simply take a refreshing dip in the huge pool in front of the house, just in the middle of the vineyards.

Tasting notes by vintage of Il Palagio di Monia Piccini wines
2011 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Torgentile
Strawberries, wild strawberries and blackberries dominate the nose. Spice of pepper and cloves, but also floral notes of wisteria. Then like a breath of wind from the herb garden. On the palate very soft and elegant, good tannin structure. It's almost light-footed, fresh. The berry mix is also evident on the palate and is reinforced by cherries and sour cherries. The good acid-tannin structure makes the wine strong and expressive.
2010 Il Palagio di Piccini Monia Torgentile
Heart cherries, wild strawberries and currants can be found in combination with blueberries, light pepper spices and cloves in the nose. On the palate delicate acidity, mild tannins, fruit basket of cherries and blueberries, wild strawberries and currants. Light mint brings tender coolness to the tongue, in balance with delicate chocolate tones. Nice and persistent.
