Chianti Classico DOCG from Fattoria Le Fonti Panzano
The young savage in the Le Fonti family
The Chianti Classico from the Fattoria Le Fonti in Panzano in Chianti shows what Sangiovese stands for right from the first sniff and sip: the wine smells spicy after the typical Chianti Classico aromas, in the mouth it shows up fruity fresh with a mixture of good acidity and spice notes. The typical Sangiovese taste of Le Fonti’s most important red wine in terms of quantity is rounded off by a light mixture of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Between the end of September and the beginning of October, the grapes are harvested by hand in Le Fonti. In small baskets the fruits are brought into the wine cellar. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the future Chianti Classico matures for 12 months in French oak barrels. A further three to six months in the bottle are added - and voilà: a still youthful, but palatable and excellent food companion is ready - with a lot of potential for aging…
An excellent family winery in Chianti Classico
The road to the Fattoria Le Fonti family winery is in the middle of the medieval village of Panzano in the Chianti Classico wine region. The company is managed by Vicky Schmitt-Vitali and her husband Guido. Only a few years ago, the two winemakers took over the vineyard from Vicky’s father Konrad. He himself bought Le Fonti as a drop-out in 1994. Today Vicky and Guido produce high quality red wines in Le Fonti in the heart of Tuscany - about 30 kilometers south of Florence - which have received many international awards in recent years. In addition to the obligatory Chianti Classico, the Fattoria Le Fonti range also includes the Chianti Classico Riserva and, with the 2013 vintage, a new Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. The wine range is complemented by the house wine, La Lepre, a refreshing Rosato and Fontissimo, a super tuscan made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Last but not least: extra virgin olive oil - an absolute must-have for lovers of products of good taste.
The Alta Valle della Greve: cool locations for cool wines
The sites of Le Fonti are located in the so-called "Alta Valle della Greve" - the "high valley of the Greve", through which meanders a small river, the Greve. Here, on the other side of the Conca d’Oro, the golden valley, the vines benefit from a special microclimate: this part of Panzano is the cooler part, which is a great advantage for the grapes in the hotter and hotter summers of recent years. The leading grape variety here is the autochthonous Sangiovese grape variety, but the two international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon are also very important in Le Fonti in Panzano. Since the winegrowers are convinced that the roots of a good wine lie in the vineyard, the latter are biologically certified. This is the only way to ensure the best quality in the glass!
Holiday in Tuscany: vineyards and wine cellar included
Tuscany vacationers, wine lovers and pleasure people are always welcome at Le Fonti! When Vicky is not busy with lunch for her three children, she greets her visitors personally and likes to take time for a walk through the vineyards and the wine cellar. The passionate winemaker not only explains the peculiarities of Le Fonti’s vineyards, but of course guests can also try out the visible and taste differences of Le Fonti wines at any time during a small wine tasting. One thing is for sure: an excursion to the vineyard and wine cellar is an unforgettable experience for all the senses!

Tasting notes by vintage of Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali wines
2013 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico
Typical Chianti Classico! The first impression in the nose straight out: delicious! Fruity, reminiscent of ripe cherries, dark berries and ripe plums, but also spicy, the flavor is reminiscent of pepper, juniper and cloves, accompanied by young herbal aromas reminiscent of thyme and a hint of mint. Very clear, very pure aromas. In the first sip you will find the same aromas as before in the nose, supported by a fine tannin structure and an appealing acidity. This Chianti Classico is juicy, animating but also quite youthful. Citrus aromas of lemons and grapefruit also appear when drinking. Long lasting finish. Beautiful, with a lot of potential in the future.
2012 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico
Typical Chianti Classico! The first impression in the nose is as it should be for this appellation: fruity and spicy, compact and complex on the palate, with acidity and tannins. More precisely: in the nose aromas of pepper, juniper and anise are superficial, then equal fruit aromas like blackberries, blueberries but also plums, sour cherries and citrus fruits. All in all very inviting and animating. On the palate, this common play of spice and fruit, strong body, without influencing the fine acid-tannin structure, is long persistent, with nuances of tea, caramel and chocolate. Very successful.
2011 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico
This 2011 Chianti Classico is intensely fresh and animating, fruity after dark berries such as blueberries, blackberries and also ripe cherries and plums. Delicate spice of cloves, pepper and some vanilla accompanies these fruity aromas. On the palate this red wine is mild, with fine tannins, good structure and robust acidity. All together very well integrated. Chianti Classico. Viva il vino!

2009 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico
This 2009 Chianti Classico has a harmonious flavor. The aromas are reminiscent of dark fruits and dark berries, all very ripe, with spices of juniper and pepper, but also notes of citrus fruits. Full liveliness! The first impression on the palate: fantastic. Very nice. Balanced and harmonious, full-bodied and structured, beautiful acidity and tannin structure, elegance and minerality. Long-lasting.

Sweet floral and tobacco notes meld into cherry pit, plum and earthiness as the 2013 opens up nicely in the glass. There is lovely depth and intensity to the flavors, yet the 2013 retains a gracious, mid-weight personality that is very appealing." - Antonio Galloni. |

Robert Parker | 87 points "Le Fonti's 2012 Chianti Classico is a crisp and tight red wine with a light ruby color and a luminous appearance. Forest berry and crisp blueberry make appearances with blanched almond and distant notes of soft spice. This is a crisp and straightforward Sangiovese-based wine that would pair with a slew of your favorite Italian dishes from simple pasta to flatbread with garden fresh ingredients. This is your quintessential Italian food wine. Compared to the Riserva that spends two years in tonneaux, this wine is aged for one." |
