Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG from Fattoria Le Fonti Panzano
Great pleasure in small & large bottles
With the 2013 harvest, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG has found its way into the Fattoria Le Fonti range. Carefully harvested by hand, the Sangiovese grapes - because the Gran Selezione is made from 100% Sangiovese - arrive first for fermentation in stainless steel tanks, then 24 months in 400-500 litre French oak barrels. For further twelve months the wine may complete its maturation in the bottle. The Gran Selezione by Le Fonti shows how elegant a pure Sangiovese wine can be. Typical of Chianti and produced only in the best years, the Gran Selezione is, in a sense, the best that the Le Fonti sites have to offer. The result: a bright, pure ruby red in the glass and lots of fruit in the aroma - and the taste: full-bodied and round off with a long finish. So a wine for every feast. And because you can never celebrate enough celebrations, you should quickly secure a supply, because depending on the vintage only about 700 bottles of 0.75 liters and about 250 magnum bottles of 1.5 liters are filled.
Fattoria Le Fonti in the heart of Chianti Classico
Halfway between Florence and Siena, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, lies the small village of Panzano. The Fattoria Le Fonti is located 450 metres above sea level below the village church. The winery covers a total area of 15 hectares - 8.5 hectares are vineyards, the rest is planted with olive trees. With an annual production of around 40,000 bottles, Fattoria Le Fonti has remained a relatively small family winery compared to many other wineries in the area. Since 1994, when Vicky’s father Konrad bought the winery, Le Fonti has been owned by the Schmitt-Vitali family. Only a few years ago Vicky and her husband Guido took over Le Fonti. To a certain extent as a plonge in the wine career - because both had nothing much to do with winegrowing until then. But with a lot of love and lifeblood they threw themselves into the project "Le Fonti" and their commitment was rewarded with numerous international awards.
Sustainability & respect - the roots of a good wine
More than two decades ago, the Panzanos winegrowers formed the ‘Unione di Viticoltori di Panzano’. One of the Unione’s goals from the very beginning has been the organic and sustainable cultivation of all vineyards. Because the conviction that Vicky and Guido fully share is that the root of a good wine lies in the vineyard. In recent years the area around Panzano in Chianti has been described by wine journalists from all over the world as an "organic Italian district". Today Sangiovese - the autochthonous leading variety of Chianti Classico - grows for the most part in the organically certified vineyards of the winegrowers. But also the two international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon can be found here. And of course not to forget the 1,500 olive trees. The locations extend at the back of the Conca d’Oro over the "Alta Valle della Greve" - the Greve valley. Here the grapes can enjoy a cooler microclimate - an advantage if it gets too hot for the grapes elsewhere in summer.
Holiday in Panzano: vineyards and wine cellar included
Holidaymakers and connoisseurs are always welcome at Le Fonti! Vicky, the owner of the winery in the middle of Panzano in Chianti, welcomes her guests personally and guides them through the vineyards and the wine cellar. The passionate winemaker and mother tells all sorts of interesting facts about the peculiarities of Le Fonti’s vineyards and, of course, about the different types of wine: the basis of the assortment is a typical, very drinkable Chianti Classico, a Chianti Classico Riserva and, since the 2013 vintage, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. In addition there is the internationally awarded super tuscan "Fontissimo", a fruity fresh Rosato and the house wine "La Lepre". A fruity and spicy olive oil rounds off the assortment - and of course the Olio can also be tasted and bought.
