It is not often to find Canaiolo pure in the bottle, the more exciting this wine is to drink. I love the scent, the aromas of fruits and flowers, and when it's still summer ........
Canaiolo Rosso di Toscana from Poggio al Sole
A red wine full of floral fragrances
Davaz family produces an IGT wine with the floral name Canaiolo (former Trafiore) among the other seven wines in the Poggio al Sole assortment. And this wine is flowery in the most true sense of the word, because "Trafiore" means "between the flowers". It may be thanks to the many flowers blooming between the vines at Poggio al Sole but not at least because of the organic cultivation of the vineyard. Or perhaps the name comes from the fact that Trafiore is a red wine made from 100% Canaiolo grapes. And this variety is known for having a fragrant note. Canaiolo is also an autochthonous grape variety of Tuscany and it is actually very often used as an addition to Chianti Classico, in order to give the sometimes rough Sangiovese rounder and softer edges and curves, but also a good fragrance. But back to Trafiore: only about 2,200 bottles are produced annually. The red wine undergoes the vinification and ageing process in steel tanks. And the result in the bottle is a young, drinkable wine that suits many occasions. No matter whether it is for a nice Italian dinner or just for chatting with friends. One thing is for sure: you can hardly get more Tuscany in your glass.
The "hill in the sun" with a long wine tradition
In the heart of Tuscany lies the Poggio al Sole winery, between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. The estate extends over a total area of 70 hectares in the hills of Chianti Classico. The name of the winery alludes to its exact landscape: Poggio al Sole means "hills in the sun". And this hill also adorns the labels of all wines and olive oil produced there. The Swiss winemaking couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz bought this winery in 1990. Johannes, who is an agronomist and oenologist, comes from a family of Swiss winegrowers who have been making excellent wines at their estate in the Bündner Herrschaft between Fläsch and Maienfeld since the early 1970s. Poggio al Sole itself, which was called Casasilia until 1969, can also enjoy a long history and tradition of winegrowing. Because before beeing sold to private people in 1969, the estate belonged to the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey. Documents from the abbey archives show that wine and olive trees were grown here since the early 12th century. Today the vineyards of Poggio al Sole extend over 24 hectares of gently undulating vineyards with south-east to south-west exposure. The two Swiss produced their first Italian wine in 1991 - just one year after they have purchased the estate. Today, the oldest of the four sons of the winegrowing couple, Valentino, lives with his family at Poggio al Sole.
Biologically certified wines with pleasure plus
All wines and products of Poggio al Sole are certified organic since the 2016 vintage. In addition to Canaiolo (former Trafiore), Poggio al Sole produces seven other wines: a white wine called Chiara, made from 80 percent Chardonnay and 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. A Rosato from 100 percent Sangiovese with the spring-fresh name Primavera and five other very different red wines. First of all, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Casasilia - the top wine from Poggio al Sole, also from 100 percent Sangiovese. A Syrah IGT from 100 percent Syrah grapes. And much much love and a lot of Tuscany! As the name suggests it, Trittico, the house wine of Poggio al Sole, consists of three grape varieties: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The range of red wines from Poggio al Sole is rounded off by Seraselva: an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Their Chianti Classico is of course at the top of the range with 90 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent of Canaiolo and of Merlot . And since about 1,500 olive trees grow on the slopes of the estate, a really good extra virgin olive oil is pressed at Poggio al Sole.
Holidays in the agriturismo in the middle of the Davaz family vineyard
Poggio al Sole is a real family business. And that's exactly what you feel when you spend your holiday there: it feels a bit like a second home! Holiday-hungry guests can choose between four spacious holiday apartments and a lovingly furnished double room. High up from the "Poggio" - i.e. from the hill - you can enjoy a fabulous view over the gently undulating vineyards, the forests and valleys laying up to the neighbouring winery Rignana and the Abbey Badia a Passignano. The view from the pool is also breathtaking, right next to the historic stone house in typical Tuscany style, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. By the way, a jump into the cool water is the ideal refreshment after a trip to nearby Panzano in Chianti or after a sightseeing or shopping trip to Siena or Florence.
