Primavera Rosato Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole
Spring in the bottle
With its beautiful soft salmon pink colour, the Primavera wine makes you want more. Desire for a warm season. Wish for spring. And that is exactly what Primavera means in italian: spring. And that's exactly how the Rosato of Poggio al Sole presents itself in the glass: fruity, fresh with a floral touch and soft tannins that make a pleasant tingling on the palate. This is one of the reasons why Rosato is perfect as an aperitif or as a charming accompaniment to a light, spring-fresh meal. By the way, this Rosato is a one hundred percent Sangiovese wine. The grapes are pressed immediately after their harvest - usually around mid-September - and after half an year of fermentation and ripening, the wine is ready to be bottled and ready for spring-like summer drinking pleasure. Because one thing is clear: this wine makes fun in every case...
The hill in the sun with the outstanding wines
The name of the estate "Poggio al Sole" (pronounced: "podscho al sole") means "hill in the sun". This hill can also be seen in a stylised form on the labels of their wines. After all, around 100,000 bottles of wine are bottled annually at Poggio al Sole. In addition, there is the extra virgin olive oil, which is the result of the fruit of the approximately 1,500 olive trees that grow on the 70 hectare of the estate around the hill. The 24 hectares of vineyards are planted with many grape varieties. The autochthonous grape variety Sangiovese accounts with its 14 hectares for the largest share. And how could it be otherwise? In the other locations, which are mostly oriented towards the south-east to south-west, a colourful mixture of international and autochthonous grape varieties can be found: Canaiolo, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay sprout on the Galestro soil, which is so typical for the Chianti Classico region.
Red, white, pink - everything a wine lover's heart could desire
All wines produced at Poggio al Sole have been certified organic since the 2016 vintage. In addition to Rosato Primavera, the Poggio al Sole range also includes the white wine called Chiara - consisting of 80 percent Chardonnay, 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. But in Chianti Classico the main focus remains on the red wines. And in this respect, Poggio al Sole can offer a wide selection of six different red wines. In addition to the excellent Chianti Classico DOCG - consisting of 90 percent Sangiovese, 5 percent Canaiolo and 5 percent Merlot, Poggio al Sole also produces an outstanding Gran Selezione called Casasilia. It is made from 100 percent Sangiovese. Without a doubt, Casasilia - the name of the winery in former times - is the top wine of Poggio al Sole. 100 percent Syrah grapes come into the Syrah Toscana Rosso IGT. A real taste experience! 100 percent Canaiolo grapes and nothing else make the Trafiore wine. Trafiore means "between the flowers" - and this wine is just as fragrant in the glass. Trittico, the house wine of Poggio al Sole, is a bit more colourful and international in their red range: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. "Tri" is for three grape varieties. The range is rounded off by Seraselva. This is a red wine with a very international touch due to the blend of 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot.
A winery with a great tradition that looks in the future
Since 1990, the Poggio al Sole winery, located between Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti, has been owned by the Swiss couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz. Johannes comes from a traditional Swiss winemaking family that has been making wine since the eraly 1970`s. Johannes, who is both agronomist and oenologist at Poggio al Sole, is responsible for the production of the wines from seedling to uncorking. Katharina makes sure that the wines find their way to lovers all over the world. Valentino, the oldest of the four sons of the winemaking couple, has also been living and working with his family at Poggio al Sole for some time. A genuine Tuscan family business in Swiss hands. Since the purchase of the winery, the Davaz family has continuously expanded the vineyards - from 10 hectares at the beginning to 24 hectares today. On the other hand, this has also made it necessary to expand the cellar in 2004. The original cellar, which was built in 1972, has been led up to the latest state of the art. Today there is a separate part of the cellar with steel tanks and a separate section where the barriques are stored. Of course, at Poggio al Sole you can always book a guided tour of the wine cellar or a wine tasting. By the way, the electricity for the cellar is produced by their own solar system. Despite all the modernity and the view into the future, the Davaz family is very aware of the great tradition of the winery. After all, documents in the archives of the nearby Abbey of Badia a Passignano prove that wine and olives were already being grown in this place in the 12th century. Whoever spends his holiday here at the Agriturismo of Poggio al Sole can fully enjoy this perfect blend of history, modernity and pleasure.
