Syrah Rosso Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole
A revelation in deep red
As its name suggests, this is a red wine made from Syrah grapes. In this case even one hundred percent. Such a wonderful wine, with such depth, complexity and elegance. The only inconvinient is that only 1,500 bottles are produced each year. Of this wonderful wine, of which every glass can be consciously enjoyed. For example, in winter in front of the fireplace - and at the same time thinking with gratitude of the beauty of Tuscany and of the sensational work that agronomist and oenologist Johannes Davaz has done on this wine. The well-structured tannins, the rich deep red colour and the lightly peppery notes make your heart feel warm. The good thing about Syrah is that it can be stored perfectly - eight years and more is no problem. You should simply make sure that you have enough of it at home.
Poggio al Sole: much more than just a small hill in the sun...
If you take a look at the labels of the wine bottles of Poggio al Sole (pronounced: "podscho al sole") - and of course of that of the own olive oil - the small, colourful hills immediately catch your eye. These have influenced the name of the winery: because Poggio al Sole simply means "hill in the sun". And this hill can look back on a truly long tradition of wine growing. Documents prove that wine and olives were already being cultivated here in the 12th century. However, at that time the estate was still called Casasilia and was owned by the nearby Abbey of Badia a Passignano. First in 1969 the estate became private property and was given the name Poggio al Sole. And it is on these sunny hills, which today cover a proud total area of 70 hectares, that the grapes are grown for the eight wines that Johannes Davaz - owner, agronomist and oenologist - produces at Poggio al Sole.
Six great red wines, a fresh white wine and a fruity rosato
An average of 100,000 bottles of wine are bottled on Poggio al Sole each year. At the top of the range is of course their Chianti Classico - a blend of 90 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent of Canaiolo and of Merlot. The wine with the name Casasilia is a Gran Selezione from 100 percent Sangiovese. Without doubt the top wine of Poggio al Sole. By the way the name Casasilia reminds of the time when the estate was still owned by the Abbey Badia a Passignano and was called Casasilia. Trittico is to a certain extent the house wine in the red wine assortment of Poggio al Sole and it is an IGT consisting of the grape trio 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The Trafiore, which means "between the flowers", is a red wine made entirely from Canaiolo grapes. And it has the reputation of being as fragrant as the flowers that grow between the vines thanks to the organic farming. Because since the 2016 vintage, all Poggio al Sole wines have been certified organic. The range of red wines is rounded off by Seraselva. This is a blend of 60 percent Cabernet Sauvignon and 40 percent Merlot. Very international though. Furthermore, the Swiss winemaker delights all friends of light wine enjoyment with his fresh white wine called Chiara, which means bright or clear. The range also includes Rosato Primavera, i.e. spring, for which only Sangiovese grapes are used.
Swiss people and Chianti Classico - a perfect pairing
In 1990 the Swiss couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz bought the Poggio al Sole winery. From a "wine-technical" point of view, Johannes Davaz is not a blank slate - after all, he is an oenologist and agronomist, and he comes from a well-known family of winegrowers who have been producing internationally renowned and excellent wines in Switzerland since the early 1970s. Since the purchase in 1990, Kathrin and Johannes have continuously expanded, developed and modernised the winery. Vineyards have been purchased, the wine cellar has been expanded and modernised, a solar system has been installed and an agriturismo now also belongs to this typically Tuscan winery.
