Trittico Rosso Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole
All good wine things are tree...
One knows that from the Italian flag, which is affectionately called "Tricolore" - the three-coloured one. And it is quite similar with the Trittico Rosso Toscana IGT from Poggio al Sole. Because as it could be guessed three grape varieties are used for it: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. And thus the Trittico has the best basis for everything that a typical Tuscan house wine needs: it is light and uncomplicated. Tasty and suitable for many occasions - whether with pizza or pasta. In other words: the Trittico fits (almost) always! But this red wine is anything but ordinary - because in a certain way it always remains elegant and pleases the palate with its pleasant fruitiness. The grapes for the Trittico are harvested at the end of September. Afterwards the grapes are put into steel tanks for fermentation for about two weeks. Then the wine matures in used barriques and steel tanks for about a year before it gets bottled. All that remains is to say: Salute!
Six times red, once white and once pink - but all biological, please!
For Johannes Davaz one thing is clear: only those who have a good raw material - i.e. good grapes - can produce good wines. And thus all wines produced at Poggio al Sole have been certified organic since the 2016 vintage. In addition to the white Chiara, the Poggio al Sole range also includes Rosato Primavera, a fruity, fresh, 100% Sangiovese wine. But the main focus in the Chianti Classico region is naturally on the red wines. In addition to the excellent Chianti Classico DOCG - consisting of 90 percent Sangiovese, 5 percent Canaiolo and 5 percent Merlot - Poggio al Sole also has a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione called Casasilia. It is made from 100 percent Sangiovese and is without doubt the top wine of Poggio al Sole. One hundred percent Syrah grapes are used for the Syrah Toscana Rosso IGT. A real taste experience! One hundred percent Canaiolo grapes are used for Trafiore, which means "between the flowers". The range is rounded off by Seraselva - an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Poggio al Sole: 70 hectares of smooth ondulating sunny hills
The winery "Poggio al Sole" (pronounced: "podscho al sole"), which means "hill in the sun", is situated at the highest point of a sun-drenched hill in the middle of the unique landscape of the Chianti Classico region. This hill can also be seen on the labels of all their wines. In reality the estate is a 70 hectare area of gently rolling hills between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. Vines grow here on 24 hectares - 14 hectares of which are planted with Sangiovese. In addition some Canaiolo, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay vines grow here in the hills of Poggio al Sole. And around 1,500 olive trees as well. In 1990 the Swiss couple Kathrin and Johannes Davaz bought the winery. From a "wine-technical" point of view, Johannes Davaz is not a blank page - after all, he is both oenologist and agronomist, and he comes from a well-known family of winemakers who have been producing internationally recognised and excellent wines in Switzerland since the early 1970s. Since the purchase in 1990, Kathrin and Johannes have continuously expanded, developed and modernised the winery. More vineyards have been purchased, the wine cellar has been expanded and modernised, a solar system has been installed and an agriturismo now also belongs to this typical Tuscan winery. Nowadays the oldest of the four sons of the winemaking couple - Valentino, lives with his family at Poggio al Sole.
Holidays in Tuscany - holidays with the Davaz family
Poggio al Sole is a real family business. And that's exactly what you feel when you spend your holiday here: it feels a bit like a second home! Holiday-hungry guests can choose between four spacious holiday apartments and a lovingly furnished double room. High up from the "Poggio" - from the hill - you can enjoy a fabulous view over the gently undulating vineyards, the woods and valleys up to the neighbouring winery Rignana and to the Abbey of Badia a Passignano. The view from the pool is also breathtaking. It is situated right next to the historic stone house in typical Tuscany style, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees. By the way, a jump into the cool water is the ideal refreshment after a trip to nearby Panzano in Chianti or after a sightseeing or shopping trip to Siena or Florence.
