Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva DOP del Chianti Classico from Rocca di Montegrossi
Green gold in bottles
In the olive groves of Rocca di Montegrossi about 1,000 olive trees grow and thrive on the best slopes. The 20 hectares of cultivated land are almost exclusively Coreggiolo, with a few Moraiolo trees in between. Traditionally, the olive trees grow in a mixed culture with fruit trees. After harvesting by hand, the olives are cold-pressed. After careful filtration, the oil is bottled. Approximately 2,000 litres of green gold are extracted in this way each year. The olive oil of Rocca di Montegrossi is reminiscent of young artichokes, green apples and green tomatoes, but also of bananas - in some moments even of the delicate scent of grass. The taste of Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva DOP del Chianti Classico is velvety and dark, but the finish is very spicy to hot. A wonderful base for any typical Tuscan meal.
Rocca di Montegrossi: red wine from Chianti Classico with noble roots
About seven kilometres south of Gaiole in Chianti lies the small village of Monti in Chianti, in the centre of the oldest wine-growing region in the world. Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi runs the Rocca di Montegrossi winery right here, in the heart of "historic" Chianti. Marco comes from the oldest noble family of Tuscany, which is considered the "inventor" of Chianti or the "Chianti formula". The family is still based in the Castello di Brolio, in the immediate vicinity of the Rocca di Montegrossi winery. This is one of the reasons why Marco feels strongly connected to the Chianti region - and especially to Monti with its gentle hills - the wine tradition of Chianti Classico and the culture of the region. He loves how he lives and where he lives.
Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi: a family with tradition - a winery with innovation
The Ricasoli family can therefore look back to a long wine-growing tradition. And so today Marco produces excellent red wines and a Vin Santo wine, all of which are highly praised by the international trade press, at the winery, which has been organically managed and certified for several years now. The terroir, i.e. the combination of soil and microclimate, offers excellent conditions for Sangiovese and all other grape varieties growing in the vineyards. About 20 hectares of the 100 hectare estate are planted with vines. There are the autochthonous grape varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Pugnitello as well as the international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Also a white wine variety, the Malvasia Bianco di Toscana, grows here. It is used for the unique Vin Santo.
Great red wines, sweet vin santo, fruity rosato and spicy olio
Marco’s strong attachment to its land and its history can also be felt in its wines: in addition to the Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione - the grapes which grow in the location of the same name next to the church - there is a strong and elegant Chianti Classico, the noble, structured super tuscan with the names Geremia - a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a fruity and sweet rosato in the assortment. The Vin Santo produced from Rocca di Montegrossi is outstanding: a true delicacy and preciousness at the same time. And of course the fruity spicy olive oil Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva, which is cold pressed from the fruits of the approximately 1,000 olive trees that grow in the estate.
