Agriturismo Tuscany: Holidays between vineyards and culture

What exactly is an agriturismo?

The term agriturismo is made up of the Italian words agricoltura (agriculture) and turismo (tourism). It is a special type of vacation where you stay directly on a farm - be it a vineyard, an olive farm or even a castle. This type of vacation is an absolute hit, especially in Tuscany, as it perfectly combines nature, enjoyment and culture.

Today, there are agriturismo offers for every taste throughout Tuscany. From small family-run businesses to noble wine estates - everyone will find their perfect accommodation here. Whether you prefer to stay in the middle of hilly Chianti with its vineyards, olive groves and forests or further south near Siena, where cypress avenues and sunflower fields dominate the landscape, there are charming private houses, apartments or cozy B&Bs everywhere. Even on the coast, you can enjoy nature and the sea in an agriturismo: beach feeling in Versilia, hiking near Lucca, wine tasting in Bolgheri or relaxing in the shade of the pine forests of the Maremma.

Agriturismo in Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico, the oldest wine region between Florence and Siena, is a real highlight for anyone who wants to experience Italian country life up close. The hilly landscape changes according to the season: bright green in early summer, pleasantly cool in the hot summer months and spectacular colors in autumn. The olive harvest in October and November is a special experience - a great opportunity to enjoy the Tuscan autumn to the full.

Best starting point for day trips

Chianti Classico is the perfect starting point for your tour of discovery in Tuscany:

  • Florence, Siena and San Gimignano are only a short drive away - perfect for sightseeing & shopping.

  • Arezzo and Volterra are also worthwhile destinations for culture fans.

  • Even a trip to the sea is included! In just under two hours you can be on the Versilia coast, where you can enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine after a day on the beach.

Pure nature & best climate

An agriturismo in Chianti Classico not only offers fantastic wine landscapes, but also a particularly pleasant climate. The vineyards, olive groves and forests ensure a pleasant coolness even on hot days. Many wineries can be reached via the typical Tuscan strade bianche (white gravel roads), which are considered intangible cultural heritage. Away from the crowds of tourists, you can enjoy absolute peace and relaxation here amidst the vines and in the shade of an olive tree.

When the good is so close

Living at a winery does not mean boredom. Often, the wide range of offers is literally on the doorstep, for example the possibility of cellar tours and wine tastings, often in combination with delicious Tuscan specialties such as a typical Tuscan plate with proscuitto Toscano, salami and pecorino cheese, called affettati misti.

In cooking classes, you can learn how to prepare homemade pasta, bruschetta or pazanella in a fun way, inspired by the good food in the local restaurants.

In most cases, the higher the density of wineries in a place, the greater the likelihood of good restaurants. At least that is my experience. And it is the same in Chianti Classico. Often just a stone's throw away you will find typical restaurants serving Tuscan cuisine, also known as "cucina povera".

Beef or not to Beef

If you are a meat lover, you should definitely try the famous Bistecca alla Fiorentina - a T-bone steak at least 4 cm thick that is grilled over an open fire. Many restaurants offer this special cut of meat. Best known for this specialty is Dario Cecchini, the famous butcher from Panzano in Chianti, who you may have already seen on Netflix.

Activities for explorers & adventurers

If you fancy some exercise after culture, wine and good food, Chianti Classico offers many outdoor experiences:

  • Hikes through vineyards and olive groves or to the highest peak in the region, Monte San Michele.

  • Cycling - on gentle or challenging routes, depending on your fitness level.

  • Vespa tours to experience the dolce vita up close.

  • Cruise through Chianti on an open Ape - with a driver who will show you the best spots.

Agriturismo. Tuscany. With pool, please!

The agriturismo offer in Chianti Classico is extremely varied. Whether you are traveling as a couple or with a large group, there is the right accommodation for everyone:

  • Romantic apartments for couples, small and large families

  • Restored barns for a private stay

  • Private villas for larger groups and families

  • Small, privately run B&Bs with Tuscan charm

Many agriturismi have pools with panoramic views where you can relax and enjoy a glass of wine. Or you can take the opportunity to listen to my podcast "A glass of wine with Nina in Chianti" - there you can find out even more about the region, its people and its wines.

The pool invites you to relax with a panoramic view
