General Assembly of the Consorzio Chianti Classico: Rising sales figures in all Chianti Classico categories
Gallo Nero
Panzano in Chianti
During the General Assembly of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, Giovanni Manetti, President of the Consorzio, presented the members with an interim report on the first five months of the year. And the results are quite impressive!
The triumph of the Gran Selezione!
In all three Chianti Classico categories - Gran Selezione, Riserva and, of course, Chianti Classico itself - sales figures rose by eight percent compared to the previous year, with Gran Selezione, which now accounts for six percent of total production, recording the greatest growth at 19 percent! The reason for the Gran Selezione's triumph: in the DOCG anniversary year 2016, many wineries expanded their range to include the Gran Selezione - and this outstanding vintage was introduced at the beginning of this year. There are now a total of 155 wines in this top category from 136 wineries. And although Gran Selezione and Riserva only account for 37 percent of total Chianti Classico production, together they still generate around 50 percent of sales!
Stable and positive economic situation in the heart of Tuscany
Giovanni Manetti, President of the Consorzio Chianti Classico, emphasized above all the positive and very stable economic situation, which in his opinion is primarily due to the high quality standards of the producers. The key to this is the organic cultivation of the vineyards and the sustainable management of the ecosystem. Manetti himself, with his Fontodi winery, is one of the long-standing organic winegrowers in Chianti Classico. Another indicator of the economic stability of the DOCG: the constant barrel wine prices. Since December 2017, this has remained constant at 300 euros per hectoliter.
Enhancement for Chianti Classico: application for UNESCO World Heritage status
Chianti Classico is set to be further enhanced by its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites - the application process is underway. In addition, the "Distretto rurale del Chianti" working group is taking measures to promote the cultural, social and economic development of the growing region while actively maintaining the natural balance.
