Podcast 012 | Mr. Sangiovese? A conversation with Michael Schmelzer from the Monte Bernardi winery

Michael Schmelzer

Monte Bernardi | Panzano in Chianti

Welcome to a new episode of my podcast. In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Schmelzer from Monte Bernardi. Michael, affectionately referred to by me as "Mr. Sangiovese", gives us an insight into the work of winemaking and his passion for the Sangiovese grape.

Mr. Sangiovese?

Monte Bernardi, located in Panzano in Chianti, was acquired by the Schmelzer family in 2003. Michael, who grew up in the USA, brings a unique perspective to winemaking. He talks about the challenges and joys of winemaking, especially in different vintages such as the outstanding 2015.

A particular highlight of the meeting was the presentation of a new wine from the vineyards above Panzano. The 100% Sangiovese from these older vineyards presents itself with a characteristic plum and blood orange flavor. This diversity and the differences to other Monte Bernardi wines show the versatility of the terroir and the specificity of Sangiovese. Michael emphasizes the importance of traditional methods and respect for nature. His philosophy of intervening as little as possible in the growth process of the vines in order to maintain the natural balance is reflected in the quality and authenticity of his wines.

Monte Bernardi also produces wines from international grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which Michael was initially skeptical about. Nevertheless, he realized that these wines could help to highlight the special features of the Panzano terroir and make them accessible to a wider public.

We also talk about the future of Chianti Classico and the importance of preserving and enhancing the unique characteristics of the Sangiovese grape. Michael's approach and dedication to traditional winemaking provide valuable insights.
