Gagliole
The Antico Podere Gagliole winery, located in the heart of Chianti Classico in Castellina, has been owned by the Swiss Bär-Bettschart family since 1990. Monika Bär-Bettschart first fell in love with this little corner of the world on vacation when she was young and then with Thomas. They only acquired Gagliole after their marriage. The family still lives in Zurich, but their "heart and soul" is in Tuscany.
La Valletta
Initially, the Gagliole vineyards were leased out. It was not until around ten years later that the family decided to produce and market wine under their own label. In 2011, Thomas Bär added another vineyard to the family estate, namely La Valletta in Panzano in Chianti, and shortly afterwards opened a bed & breakfast of the highest standard. Today, the Gagliole winery has a total of 22 hectares of vineyards, all of which are cultivated sustainably. In 2019, La Valletta was expanded to include a modern cellar and warehouse that meet all requirements. You could call it the oenological center of Gagliole.
Warm welcome
Alessia Riccieri in particular, who is responsible for the sale and export of the wines worldwide, always extends a warm welcome to all visitors and guests. This applies both to guests at the Bed & Breakfast and to curious visitors who wish to tour the Gagliole cellar at La Valletta. She also offers the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes of the winery and wine production. With her extensive knowledge of viticulture, which is always up to date, Alessia is happy to provide support and assistance. If Alessia is not on site, Cosimo, Edi, Angela and many others provide an equally warm welcome.
Castellina in Chianti
Eight of the Gagliole winery's 22 hectares of land are in Castellina in Chianti. Here, the vines grow on ancient terraces, with olive trees and roses in between. This cultivation method not only looks spectacular, but the arrangement of the terraces and the special location ensure a pleasant interplay between sun and shade for the vines. It also ensures an ecological balance in the vineyard. The soils here are galestro - loose layers of rock in which the vines can form deep roots. This produces mineral, elegant wines.
Panzano in Chianti
Ten hectares of vineyards are located in Panzano in Chianti, which is known for its ideal growing conditions due to its shell shape and microclimate. A further four hectares are located near the venerable Passignano Abbey. The vineyards of La Valletta are situated at quite a high altitude and are therefore bathed in sunshine for most of the day and at the same time are buffeted by cool winds. Together with these factors, the rich clay soils, which are interspersed with many stones, bring structure and strength to the wines. The age of the vines that grow here on the upper edge of the golden valley ranges from two to forty-five years. This creates a perfect balance between youth and maturity, freshness and spice.
Tradition
The Gagliole coat of arms, which can also be found on the bottles, is adorned with a compass and a horizontal balance beam. These symbols were also found on the Bettschart family's "house mark" in the Middle Ages. Two symbols that stand for the highest quality, unrestricted care and absolute precision. And it is precisely under these premises that the Bär-Bettschart family and their team dedicate themselves today to the creation of their wines. Never without forgetting the Tuscan traditions that have been handed down.
Innovation
At the same time, Gagliole relies on the unusual method of "vinification intégrale". The grapes are first gently de-stemmed, sorted at the vibrating console and then transferred directly to the barrique barrel, where all the fermentation processes take place. A "holistic" method, in other words. The barrels are then turned several times a day to ensure constant contact between the juice, skins, seeds and barrel. In contrast to conventional fermentation methods, the temperature in the barrel is lower and very constant and lasts 45 to 60 days. This produces wines with denser colors and aromas reminiscent of wild berries and spice.
