Chianti Classico DOCG from Fontodi
Chianti Classico DOCG: 100 % Sangiovese, 100 % Tuscany!
In addition to the "super star" Flaccianello, the Chianti Classico also has great importance on Fontodi in terms of quantity. This Chianti Classico is one of three pure Sangiovese wines in the Fontodi range and can confidently be described as the "little brother" of Flaccianello. Of course the very best grapes are used for Flaccianello, but Chianti Classico still has a lot to offer in terms of taste and quality. Nevertheless, Giovanni Manetti, the owner of the Fontodi winery, can be considered one of the pioneers of the rediscovery of the Sangiovese autochthonous grape variety, first with a commitment to the Flaccianello, later with other of his wines and finally with the example of many other winegrowers in Tuscany. Giovanni Manetti relied on Sangiovese, modern methods of vinification and the use of barrels when the whole world started to seek wines from international grape varieties and the super tuscans were in great demand. The grapes for Chianti Classico are first stored in steel tanks for two weeks and then in Troncais and Allier barrels for 18 months. The success haven´t left Signore Manetti untill today! 200,000 bottles of Chianti Classico are available every year for wine connoisseurs all over the world.
Wine enjoyment from the golden valley of Panzano in Chianti
You will find the lovely Tenuta Fontodi in the best location of the Conca d’Oro, in the golden valley of Panzano in Chianti, south of Florence. In 1968 the Manetti family bought the property. Giovanni Manetti, who now runs the estate, was only 16 years old when his family bought it. The replanting of the vineyards in the Conca d’Oro began after a careful consideration and with a clear decision in favour of the Sangiovese vines. Although international wines were "en vogue" at that time, Fontodi celebrated success after success with the Flaccianello della Pieve, which is made from one hundred per cent Sangiovese grapes since 1981. Wine lovers may well know the label adorned with an Etruscan cross and the contents of these bottles very well, but they do not know from which vineyard this noble wine comes. Today Giovanni Manetti is the manager of the 130-hectare estate - more than 80 hectares of which are vineyards. Around 400,000 bottles of wine are produced every year from the grapes, which grow on the completely organically cultivated areas.
Superstar Sangiovese: that is Chianti Classico pure in a wine glass
No doubt that the Sangiovese grape has the Fontodi range firmly under control: three of the five red wines are made entirely from Sangiovese - of course, each with grapes from different sites and with different fermentation and ripening processes. The top name among the red wines is still the Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT - since 1981 produced from one hundred per cent Sangiovese. The largest quantity represents the Chianti Classico - also a 100% Sangiovese. Number three in the range of Sangiovese single-varietal wines is the Gran Selezione of Fontodi, in which Vigna del Sorbo has been renamed since the 2010 vintage. The exact opposite of these three Sangioveses is the Syrah Case Via - a pure international red in the Fontodi range, which despite the Syrah grapes reflects the typical terroir of Panzano. Rare but no less popular is the Meriggio - a white wine from Chianti Classico from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
Tenuta Fontodi: organic wine meets dream holiday on perfect terroir
The use of pesticides was abandoned early in Fontodi - today the winery is officially certified as an organic estate. The interplay of terroir, i.e. the sites where the vines grow and the grapes ripen, and the "Galestro" soil, which is ideal for Sangiovese, produces wines that do not need to fear international comparison. All these conditions ensure that the Sangiovese ripens perfectly in the Conca d’Oro and at the same time retains its freshness, acidity and structure. Naturally, the international Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties also feel very at home in the Fontodi vineyards - of course in much smaller quantities. It is also truly splendid to spend your holiday in one of the two agriturismo estates that belong to the winery. Whether in Villa Pecille on the upper edge of the Conca d’Oro and not far from the medieval Panzano in Chianti, with its five fantastic apartments and swimming pool surrounded by vineyards. Or in the agriturismo La Rota, which is located in the heart of the valley with three lovely furnished apartments and a pool. This is pure Tuscany!

Fontodi

2007 Fontodi Chianti Classico
Garnet red. Aromas of dark, ripe fruits such as cherries, blueberries or currants. Also spices of cloves, nutmeg and vanilla refine the picture. On the palate a wonderful overall composition presents itself: fruits and spice aromas play over the senses and appear soft and harmonious, despite fine tannins and a slight acidity. This full-bodied Chianti Classico promises a long shelf life and pleasure. Alltogether a silky drinking pleasure, which nestles like a silk scarf around the taste buds.

Vini Buoni | 4 Stars |
Robert Parker | 92 points "Fontodi's 2013 Chianti Classico is a textbook expression from the appellation. The wine represents a pure expression of Sangiovese that sees six months in large oak casks and an additional 18 months in neutral barrique. Thanks to that non-intrusive aging regime, the wine shows enormous clarity and purity. Sangiovese is front and center. Wild berry, blue flower and tangy spice abound." |
Wine Spectator | 89 points "This red delivers cherry and strawberry flavors in a rich profile, turning crisp and lightly astringent on the finish. Shows a bit more depth than many 2013s. Drink now through 2018. 12,000 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 16,5 points "Panzano, from a vineyard in the heart of the Conca d’Oro, or ‘golden shell’, of Chianti Classico. Mid crimson. Edgy, stimulating nose-tickling aroma. Medium body and great balance. Definitely for food with its mild bitterness on the end. Racy. The ultimate food wine. Dry finish." |
James Suckling | 94 points "A dense and velvety wine with black chocolate and cherry character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a fresh finish. Altogether delicious. So well done and from organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." |
Vinous | 92 points "The 2013 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. My impression is that proprietor Giovanni Manetti has pulled back on the intensity in his wines, although he insists nothing has changed. Still, the 2013 impresses for its total polish and finesse. Of course, some of that may be attributable to the late-ripening vintage. In my view, slightly shorter macerations and more use of large format oak plays a role here. At the same time, there is plenty of Fontodi's signature textural richness, but also striking aromatic presence and tons of persistence. A closing burst of acidity adds vivacity to the dark red and blue stone fruit flavors. The 2013 is fresh, less heavy and also less oaky than some recent editions. This is an absolutely impeccable wine from Fontodi." - Antonio Galloni. |

Robert Parker | 92 points "The 2009 Chianti Classico is a model of elegance and class. Firm yet well-integrated tannins provide the backdrop for expressive red cherries, licorice, tobacco and spices. The 2009 radiates across the palate with notable class. It has great fruit and plenty of structure." |
Wine Spectator | 91 points "Pure, elegant and harmonious, boasting cherry, raspberry and light earth flavors. Balanced, with a vibrant structure and a lingering finish of tobacco notes. Drink now through 2020. 10,000 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Greve in Chianti. 100% Sangiovese. Youthful mid ruby. Complex nose of undergrowth, spice and cherry. Still looks very young. Firm tannin and compact succulent cherry fruit with zippy acidity on the finish. Should be cellared for a couple of years. Great effort for the vintage." (WS) |
James Suckling | 93 points "Lively and delicious with blueberry and lemon character. Full and silky, with polished tannins and an attractive finish. Always excellent. Dense. Delicious now, but will improve with age. Made with organically grown grapes." |

What other people think about 2007 Chianti Classico DOCG from Fontodi ...
Robert Parker | 91 points "The 2007 Chianti Classico is fresh and perfumed as it bursts into the palate in a generous, silky expression of Sangiovese. This is an especially open vintage for the Chianti Classico that should drink well upon release. The balance, harmony and softness are all commendable. This is a fabulous effort from Fontodi." |
Wine Spectator | 91 points "Blackberry and dark plum aromas follow through to a full body, with silky tannins and a bright, fruity finish. There's a nice combination of bright fruit and clean acidity. Drink now. 14,000 cases made." – JS |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Pure, scent. Classic Sangiovese nose. Very pure and racy and well defined. Rich and medicinal but in a good way. Only just drinkable and no hurry. No short-changing of quality here." |
Vinous | 92 points "Bright red. Vibrant raspberry and candied cherry aromas are strongly underscored by violet and vanilla. Juicy and dense on entry, then soft and creamy in the middle, with sweet flavors of red cherry, redcurrant, licorice and minerals. This wonderfully balanced wine finishes long and smooth, with enough ripe acidity to maintain its shape, and lingering mineral and peppery nuances. Beautiful wine." - Ian D'Agata |
