Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT from Fontodi
Flaccianello: the superstar from Chianti Classico
It is not without reason that the wines of Fontodi are among the best in Italy - not to say the whole world! The special Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT is the superstar par excellence. It has already been voted one of the top 10 wines in the world by the famous American wine magazine "WineSpectator" several times. Since 1981, the Fontodi Winery has been celebrating success after success, year after year, with the Flaccianello. When Giovanni Manetti took over the property at the beginning of the 1980s, he was under the impression of the numerous new, much wanted super tuscans - above all the Tignanello of Antinori. In response to these wines made from international grape varieties, and in collaboration with the oenologist Franco Bernabei, who still works for Fontodi, Giovanni made the Flaccianello for the first time in 1981. By the way in the beginning as Vino da Tavola (VdT). A red wine made from 100 per cent Sangiovese - contrary to the prevailing trend at the time - but vinified according to new, modern methods and matured in barrels, which was unusual in the beginning. Giovanni Manetti, with his Flaccianello, can thus undoubtedly be considered one of the pioneers who helped the autochthonous Sangiovese variety to its present status in Chianti Classico. After careful manual harvesting, the Flaccianello grapes are vinified in stainless steel tanks for a minimum of three weeks, naturally at a controlled temperature. For his malolactic fermentation the wine is aged in oak barrels for two years - Troncais and Allier. The label of Flaccianello shows an Etruscan cross, the original of which can be found in the church "Pieve di San Leolino" near the house of the Manettis.
100% autochthonous? Or 100% international? Who has the choice, has the joy!
As already mentioned, the undisputed superstar in the Fontodi range is the Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT. But also the other wines of the Tenuta Fontodi do not need to hide. The Vigna del Sorbo Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a red and also "solo Sangiovese" since the vintage 2012. The lion’s share of the Sangiovese grapes harvested on Fontodi is naturally used for the Chianti Classico. After all about 200,000 bottles of Chianti Classico are bottled year after year at Fontodi and shipped everywhere in the world. Another red wine is produced at Tenuta Fontodi but in smaller quantities - the Syrah Case Via. One thing distinguishes it quite significantly from the other three reds : it consists of 100 per cent of the international grape variety Syrah. And a wine with the predicate "rarity value" is also part of Fontodi’s range - the white Meriggio from 100 per cent Sauvignon Blanc, which is only produced in very small quantities.
Tenuta Fontodi: a flagship of good taste in Chianti Classico
Tenuta Fontodi is one of the largest wineries in and around Panzano in Chianti. The facts speak for themselves: a total of 130 hectares of land, more than 80 hectares of which are vineyards, more than 20 employees and a production of around 400,000 bottles of wine per year - and this since 1968. But behind all these facts is a lot of enthusiasm and love for wine, for Chianti Classico and of course for the autochthonous grape variety Sangiovese. When the Manetti family, an entrepreneurial family specialising in the production of terracotta, bought the property, they were originally looking for a weekend home in the countryside. Purely by chance 20 hectares of vineyards were acquired with the property. So the Manettis very quickly decided to take advantage of the slumbering potential of the sites in the world famous Conca d’Oro - the shell-shaped valley of Panzano in Chianti. The interplay of terroir, i.e. the sites where the vines grow and the grapes ripen, and the "Galestro" soil, which is ideal for Sangiovese, produces wines that do not need to fear international comparison. All these conditions ensure that the Sangiovese ripens perfectly in the Conca d’Oro and at the same time retains its freshness, acidity and structure. Naturally, the international Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Syrah or Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties also feel at home in the Fontodi vineyards - to a much lesser extent, of course. Since the beginning of the 1980s Giovanni Manetti has been the sole director of Tenuta Fontodi, and his brother Marco takes care of the terracotta production.
Dream holiday in Tuscany: Panzano, pool & more….
Panzano in Chianti was chosen by the international wine press as Italy’s organic district. The Tenuta Fontodi has been certified as an organic estate for a long time because of the many years without use of sprays or pesticides. And where the wine "feels good", the people are also doing well. The two agriturismo estates belonging to Tenuta Fontodi are perfect for a dream holiday in Tuscany: Villa Pecille welcomes the holiday-makers with its five dream apartments of various sizes. Here you can spend your days at the pool with a view over the Conca d’Oro, on your own terrace or on excursions to one of the surrounding wine cellars, to the nearby medieval Panzano or to the famous places of Tuscany - from Florence to Siena. The agriturismo La Rota, located in the heart of the valley, enchants with its three lovely furnished apartments and the picturesque pool. More Panzano in Chianti is not possible…

Tasting notes by vintage of Fontodi wines
2008 Flaccianello della Pieve Colli Toscana Centrale IGT
All the aromas play together harmoniously like in a great orchestra: delicate notes of wood, vanilla, juniper, chocolate and tobacco. Dark cherries lie proverbially on the palate, followed by violets and vanilla in combination with velvety and warmth. Wonderful elegance, delicate, harmonious tannins, full-bodied and full of character. Taste at the highest level.

Robert Parker | 94 points "As it is every year, the 2012 Flaccianello della Pieve represents a selection of the best fruit from the best vineyards (excluding, of course, Vigna del Sorbo that is dedicated to its own wine). The five parcels span various soils types and exposures, and the youngest vines are 20 years old. Because the fruit selection process is so detailed, the darkest and smallest clusters are carefully chosen. As a result, the fruit is rich in polyphenols, thick extract and extra aromatic intensity. The 2012 vintage saw yields reduced by as much as 20%, meaning that fruit selection was even more severe in this vintage. This beautiful wine shows abundant richness and generosity with toned mineral nuances that are wrapped within bold flavors of dark fruit and spice. The wine is rich and velvety in texture." |
Wine Spectator | 90 points "A supple, fluid texture sets the pace for the black currant and blackberry flavors in this concentrated red. Earth, tobacco and leather notes add interest as the tannins frame the finish. Sangiovese." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 17,5 points "Aromas here are more savoury and refined than on the Felsina Fontalloro 2011. More perfumed too. Chewy but very finely textured tannins. Packed with dark fruit and spice. Long and too young to broach now, unless you have a chunk of protein to hand." (JH) |
James Suckling | 94 points "A fresh and clean wine with mineral, blackberry, blueberry and lavender character. Full body, fine and chewy tannins and a tangy finish. Refined and beautiful. Needs a year or two to soften. Organically grown grapes." |
Vinous | 97 points "Tasted next to the 2012 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo, the Flaccianello is richer, deeper and more flamboyant. Super-ripe red stone fruit, smoke, licorice and dark spices meld together in a deep, powerful wine. The 2012 is impressive, but personally I prefer the finesse and freshness of the Sorbo. The greater influence of new French oak is also felt in the wine's texture. Still, that is splitting hairs, as the level here is high. Very high." - Antonio Galloni |
Falstaff |

Robert Parker | 94 points "The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is a huge wine that definitely shows the richness of the year, yet somehow retains fabulous balance. Ripe black cherries, mocha, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. The 2009 Flaccianello is impressive, but readers will have to be exceptionally patient. As good as the 2009 is, it doesn’t have the sexiness of the 2004 or 2007, nor the power of vintages like 2006 or 2008. Instead, it is a bit of an in-between wine with elements of all those years. Today it is the wine’s structure and concentration that dominates. My most recent tasting suggests the wine is beginning to close down hard. Next to the Sorbo, Flaccianello has more richness and volume, but slightly less vibrancy." |
Wine Spectator | 93 points "Elegant, this is also closed, showing some tannins at the moment, along with black cherry, black currant, and spice flavors. In an awkward phase right now, yet this feels like it will develop a little more quickly.—Non-blind Flaccianello vertical (July 2014). Best from 2016 through 2028. 5,000 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 18 points "Still youthful and very transparent and transparently Sangiovese. Quintessentially Tuscan red. Racy fresh acidity but quite dense enough. Still some tannins. Was great with steak straight off the barbecue." |
James Suckling | 95 points "A structured red with polished tannins and subtle vanilla, chocolate and currant character on the nose and palate. Full body, with integrated tannins and a compacted palate. Builds on the palate. Muscular and intense. Needs until 2015 to soften. Try it then." |
Vinous | 94 points "The 2009 Flaccianello is gorgeous, but the relative shortcomings of the year relative to the sublime 2010 are apparent when the wines are tasted side by side. Firm tannins support a core of dark red fruit, smoke and crushed flowers. Readers will need to give the 2009 time to settle down, but it is unquestionably a fine Flaccianello." - Antonio Galloni |

Robert Parker | 94 points "The 2008 Flaccianello della Pieve is quite pretty, even if it is a bit buttoned up. It possesses lovely perfume and sweet Pinot-like fruit backed by acidity and structure that are unquestionably those of Sangiovese. Today the 2008 impresses for its energy and verve. It should be a fabulous wine to drink in another few years, once the tannins settle down a bit. This is yet another 2008 that has grown considerably in stature over the last year." |
Wine Spectator | 93 points "Linear, austere, the '08 is beginning to show some woodsy, underbrush elements, matched to a racy, nervous profile. The tannins are assertive for now and the length fine.—Non-blind Flaccianello vertical (July 2014)." – BS |
James Suckling | 97 points "The pureness of fruit is so intense here. It's also so clean and beautiful. The wine shows fabulous aromas of flowers, blueberries, and raspberries. It’s full-bodied, with chocolate, licorice, and plums. The texture is very velvety. This is a wine in near perfect proportions." |

Saftig und dicht in Ansatz und Verlauf, zeigt engmaschiges Tannin, im Kern süßer Schmelz, kompakt, steht erst am Beginn einer langen Entwicklung, im Finale satter Druck, salzig." |
