Petresco Toscana IGT from Le Cinciole
The top wine from Le Cinciole estate
At Le Cinciole they are used to work at the highest level in every aspect - and the Petresco Toscana IGT is undoubtedly the top wine of the house. The local typicality and the character of each different vintage are carried in the Petresco one hundred per cent by the Sangiovese grape. Luca and Valeria personally ensure that only the best grapes are used for Petresco during the harvest. After spontaneous fermentation in cement tanks at a controlled temperature of maximum 28°C, the grapes undergo malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. 18 months in the barrel and at least 12 months of aging in the bottle produce a wine that fascinates also pampered wine connoisseurs. With fine, silky tannins, harmonious wild and sour cherry aromas and with a clear mineral spice, as it is typical for Sangiovese. An absolute top wine, with which Luca and Valeria show at the highest level what is possible to reach if you respect nature and work in harmony with it.
Podere Le Cinciole: the organic vineyard in Panzano in Chianti
The winery Le Cinciole, located in the small village of Panzano, south of Greve, in the middle of Chianti Classico, owns more than 11 hectares of vineyards in a prime location at an average altitude of 450 meters. The sites face southeast, on the Greve side of Panzano in Chianti. The soils here consist of slate soil interspersed with clay, the so-called ‘Galestro’, which is particularly suitable for the cultivation of Sangiovese. And this is very much in line with the aims of Valeria and Luca Orsini, the owners of Le Cinciole: they want to make wines that reflect the terroir. The two winegrowers try to produce their wine in harmony with nature, the landscape and the traditions that have developed over many centuries. For this reason, the Sangiovese grape, the autochthonous grape variety of central Italy, is the center of attention for the Orsinis. And even with wines made from international grape varieties, it is important for both of them that the special terroir of Panzano is reflected in the wine.
The red wine with the certain "extra-terroir"…
In order to express the terroir in the wines, Le Cinciole cultivates almost exclusively Sangiovese. First and foremost for the Chianti Classico, which consists entirely of Sangiovese. The Riserva with the name Aluigi is also a one hundred per cent Sangiovese. And for the top wine - the super tuscan - from Le Cinciole with the name Petresco applies the same: only Sangiovese! It is rather unusual that the fruity and fresh Rosato is also produced exclusively from the classic Chianti grape. The international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah, which are grown in smaller quantities at Le Cinciole, are used for the mighty Camalaione, for example. The Cinciorosso, the "little brother" of Camalaione, contains 70% Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Syrah and 5% Merlot grapes. But the common thing for all wines is that they are all 100% organic. And even with olive oil everything is in the "green zone": the fruity extra virgin olive oil, which is a fixed component of every genuine Tuscan meal, is of course also organic.
Holidays by the organic pioneers in Tuscany
When Valeria and Luca Orsini bought Le Cinciole in 1991, they were real career changers. Over the years, they have invested a lot of time, energy and money in the renewal of the vineyards. But one thing was clear to them from the outset: cultivation must be based on "biological principles". So the entire management of the vineyards was converted to organic methods, a solar system supplies the estate and the wine cellar with electricity, all organic waste is composted itself - these are just a few of the additional measures in terms of sustainability. The winery has been certified organic since 2002 - with the aim of producing high-quality wines. The two apartments of agriturismo are situated among the organic vineyards and olive groves. From the two apartments, both suitable for four people each, you can enjoy the direct view to the old houses and towers of Panzano. The pool, lined with shady olive trees, invites you to dream and enjoy the time, while the view sweeps over vineyards and woods - preferably with a glass of wine in your hand…

Robert Parker | 93 points "The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva Petresco is striking. Dark cherries, tar, licorice and underbrush are some of the many notes that emerge from this fleshy, dynamic Riserva. The 2008 impresses for its density and juiciness, all while maintaining plenty of vintage 2008 focus. This is a hugely impressive showing. The Petresco spent 18 months in French oak barrels, all of which it handled beautifully." |
Wine Spectator | 87 points "There's a high-toned resin aroma from the oak, but this red also displays bright cherry, currant and tobacco flavors. Just a bit crisp on the finish. 375 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Deep ruby with orange rim. Sweetly perfumed with baking spice and dried cherry, but otherwise still quite closed. Crunchy fruit and energetic acidity with a hint of new oak. Still very young and a little modernist, but strikes a fantastic balance." (WS) |
James Suckling | 92 points "A wine with solid core of ripe fruit and orange peel follow through to a full body, with a creamy texture and a subtle fruity finish. Made from organic grapes." |
