Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG from Fattoria Le Fonti Panzano
Ruby red in glass, perfectly matured
The Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG from Le Fonti is always one of the award-winning red wines from the Chianti Classico. Not least because the Riserva captivates with elegance and refinement. The main component of this wine is of course Sangiovese grapes - which, like all grapes on Le Fonti, are harvested by hand. Depending on the vintage, the Sangiovese is rounded off with a touch of Merlot and/or Cabernet Sauvignon. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks. In order to support the structure of the wine and to ensure "a long life", it matures for almost two years in French oak barrels - in barriques and tonneaux. The assemblage takes place before the move into the barrel, like a quite early "wedding". The Riserva needs afterwards another six to nine months to mature in the bottle before it reaches the market. In the glass Le Fonti's Riserva presents itself in a bright ruby red and in the nose with a lot of fruit - dark berries and plums are typical. The first sip: elegant acidity, fine tannins, wonderfully integrated into the overall fruit aromas. The question is: are there enough bottles in the cellar? The Riserva is also available in the Magnum (1.5 litres) and the Double Magnum (3 litres) versions in a wooden box.
Between Florence and Siena: top red wines from Tuscany
Vicky Schmitt-Vitali is the friendly owner of the winery Fattoria Le Fonti in Panzano in Chianti. The Chianti Classico wine region, in which the winery is located, is the oldest appellation in Italy - right between Florence and Siena. Vicky and her husband Guido took over the organic vineyards from their father Konrad a few years ago. The Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties planted here produce a Chianti Classico, a Chianti Classico Riserva, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, the Fontissimo - a super tuscan, a light house wine La Lepre and a fresh Rosato. The assortment also includes an outstanding extra virgin olive oil from the estate's own olive trees. Organic farming, traditional processing combined with modern know-how - all these factors make Vicky and Guido so successful.
Fattoria Le Fonti: the winery in the middle of Panzano in Chianti
Slightly below the village church of Panzano in Chianti, in the middle of the historic centre, lies the road to the Fattoria Le Fonti winery. Vines and olive trees grow on an area of 15 hectares. The sites are located in the so-called Alta Valle della Greve, in the Greve valley, which lies on the rear side of the Conca d'Oro, the golden valley. This part of Panzano has a slightly cooler microclimate, which is advantageous for the grapes especially in the hot summer months. Because too much heat can be detrimental to the quality of the grapes and thus of the wine - a slower ripening of the grapes ensures that the fruitiness is preserved and the alcohol value of the red wines remains within a tolerable range. By the way: all existing vines on Le Fonti were replanted by Vicky's father Konrad starting in 1994 when he bought the vineyard.
Discover vineyards and wine cellars with Vicky Schmitt-Vitali
A holiday in Tuscany without wine tasting would be like pasta without parmesan - simply unthinkable! The numerous signs in and around Panzano invite holidaymakers to visit Fattoria Le Fonti. Because a tour through the vineyards and the wine cellars with Vicky Schmitt-Vitali is certainly a holiday experience that you won't forget soon. The passionate winemaker explains the particularities of the vineyards of Le Fonti, explains the different grape varieties that grow here and, of course, invites visitors for a wine tasting. And this is indeed an unforgettable experience for taste and palate!

Tasting notes by vintage of Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali wines
2012 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico Riserva
Visibly convincing: ruby red with violet reflections and deep dark in the core. Great flavor! A lot of fruit in it. Blackberries, very dark plums, currants and cassis play with the floral aromas of violets. So lively, fruity, fresh and joyful, this Chianti Classico Riserva is accompanied by a subtle spice in the nose. Then, at the first sip: nice, good flow, the aromas from the nose repeat themselves, fine acidity supported by a wonderful fruit sweetness, full-bodied, compact, fine tannins, well integrated. Still quite juvenile, but nevertheless with decent life-length. The only question is: are there enough bottles in the cellar?
2011 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico Riserva
When you look at the glass you already get a taste: dark ruby red, with violet reflections and a dark core. It is beguiling the nose. Aromas of fruits and spices dominate the impression in the nose: blueberries, blackberries, cool notes of eucalyptus, spicy notes of pepper and juniper, but also citrus. The absolute conviction on the palate: everything is wonderfully coordinated and perfectly integrated. Fruit, body, acidity, tannins find a perfect partnership for a great Chianti Classico Riserva from Panzano in Chianti from Le Fonti.
2010 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico Riserva
This Chianti Classico from 2010 is fresh and fruity, with aromas of dark berries such as blueberries, blackberries and very ripe cherries and plums as well. Delicate spices support these fruity aromas. On the palate this red wine is mild, with fine tannins, good structure and robust acidity. Very elegant to drink.
2009 Le Fonti di Vicky Schmitt-Vitali Chianti Classico Riserva
The glass presents itself with a bright ruby red. The nose already shows a fantastic impression of this Chianti Classico Riserva, with blackberries, blueberries and plums, accompanied by a little spice, perfectly embedded in the fruity bouquet. But the flavor is not so "loud", very present and elegant. And just beautiful. Then, finally, the first sip, perfect acidity, perfect tannins, wonderfully integrated, not to say combined with all the fruit aromas that the flavor has already presented. Full-bodied, of best structure, in the finish the aromas of black tea, long lasting. This Chianti Classico Riserva from Le Fonti is a wine with a concept of safety: a firm network of aromas, acidity and tannins, structure and strength, which will certainly give you a great drinking pleasure.

Veronelli | 92 points / |
Jancis Robinson | 17 points "Panzano. 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Not much of a nose and very closed on the palate. Brooding richness and plenty of acidity. Just very youthful, and in need of age, as a proper Riserva should be." (WS) |

Robert Parker | 90 points "With grapes from Panzano in Chianti, the 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva is especially fruity and bright. Panzano sometimes offers a sweet spot of ripe cherry and you definitely sense that in the bouquet here. The nose is redolent of bold berry sensations with dried blackberry and red currant. Spice, leather and savory tobacco round off the finish. With 90% Sangiovese, 7% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, this Chianti Classico Riserva offers a more prominent taste of international grapes. The wine is aged in French and Hungarian wood for two years. Some 8,900 bottles were produced." |

90 points "The 2012 Chianti Classico Riserva hits the palate with serious depth and intensity. Black cherry, smoke, graphite, plum, licorice and menthol are fused together in a ripe, powerful Chianti Classico built on pure power. Virile and imposing, the 2012 has more than enough depth to drink well for at least a handful of years. This is a decidedly big, powerful style meant for the dinner table. The formidable tannins could use further time to soften." - Antonio Galloni |

Robert Parker | 92 points "The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva represents a tremendous effort and is a lovely short-term drinking wine. This Riserva (90% Sangiovese with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon that is aged in tonneaux for two years) is teaming with dark fruit nuances, including black cherry and plum with sweet baking spice in a supporting role. The wine is increasingly supple and soft as its warms in the glass. It reveals an upfront and immediate style that makes it a pleasure to drink within the next 3-5 years. The natural succulence of the wine would make a great pairing partner to pork or roasted chicken." |
Vinous | 89 points "A dark, powerful wine, the 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva showcases the intensity of the year while retaining terrific freshness. This decidedly intense, brooding Chianti Classico is very much on the more virile side of things for Sangiovese, with broad shoulders and considerable intensity, but all the elements are in the right place." - Antonio Galloni |
What other people think about 2010 Panzano Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG from Le Fonti ...
Wine Spectator | 88 points "This is intense, featuring balsamic, underbrush, cherry and bitter almond flavors. A bit too astringent in the end to be outstanding. 500 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 14 points "Already dark and mature-looking ruby with orange rim. Very rich, sweet and liqueur-like on the nose and overloaded with oak. Old-fashioned and beside the point." (WS) |
Vinous |
90 points "The 2010 Chianti Classico Riserva is another beautiful wine from Le Fonti. Dark red cherries meld into plums, smoke, leather, cedar and tobacco. The 2010 could use another year or so in bottle for the tannins to soften, but it is quite attractive, even today." - Antonio Galloni |

Jancis Robinson | 15,5 points "Deep, lacklustre ruby with orange rim. A little peppery and stalky on the nose with sweet fruit underneath. Quite sweet on the palate too. Looks consumer friendly enough, and rather extracted and rich." (WS) |
James Suckling | 90 points "This is rich and round with lots of ripe fruit. Full and velvety. A little one dimensional but will develop nicely with bottle age. Give it one or two years more before opening." |
Vinous | 87 points "(aged in all new barriques): Bright red. Distinctly oak-dominated wine, with sawdust and a green streak marring the fresh red fruit and herb aromas and flavors. Finishes persistent and lightly animal, with mouthpuckering tannins." - Ian D'Agata |
