Chianti Classico (N)Uovo DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino
A wine innovation, like peeled out of an egg…
The second Chianti Classico with the name "(N)Uovo" is certainly an absolute speciality in the Poggerino range - but also in comparison with other wineries. What does the name mean? "Nuovo" means new, of course. And "uovo" means nothing but an egg. If you take a look at the label of Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, you will immediately see that this wine really must have something to do with an egg. In this case with the 650 liter egg of cement, the height of a man, in which the wine is vinified. What may seem a bit strange at first glance turns out to be very innovative at second glance - nuovo! First the material - just like wood, cement is permeable to air. And we know that wine needs oxygen for its ripening process. In addition, the cement adds a few further properties: the egg is easier to clean and can therefore be used more often than an oak barrel. The egg form itself is another advantage. Because at every point in the egg the wine has a slightly different temperature - the higher up, the warmer, the lower down, the cooler. These different temperatures make the wine circulate permanently in the egg. Thus yeasts, trub materials, vitamins as well as fruit and colour particles are constantly in motion. Piero is convinced that this reveals the terroir even better and more precise. And the result is indeed a sensational Chianti Classico in which Poggerino’s Sangiovese is absolutely perfect. The first sip tells you where you are and what you drink.
A classic wine assortment with innovative egg ideas
Despite the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, the Fattoria Poggerino assortment is very traditional, and above all very Sangiovese. Piero is an advocate and admirer of the autochthonous Sangiovese grape variety - Poggerino Sangiovese grows on about 11 hectares of vineyards, and Merlot grapes are found on only one hectare. These are used for the super tuscan of Poggerino - the Primamateria. From vintage to vintage the mixing ratio is different, but always about half and half. All other wines from Poggerino - even the Spumante - are "solo Sangiovese“! The "Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso" is a classic IGT in the range - the house wine so to speak. There is also a traditional Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva called "Bugialla", which matures in large oak barrels. Poggerino also has a Rosato called "Aurora" and an extra virgin olive oil.
Organic with heart and brain!
If you look over Piero’s shoulder during he works in the vineyards, you would believe that he has a personal relationship with each vine. Even more: he treats every vine with the greatest care, every single shoot with genuine devotion. For him the management of vineyards and vegetable gardens according to biological criteria is very important. The agronomist incorporates individual biodynamic measures following Rudolf Steiner‘s teaching into his work in the vineyard again and again. He is deeply convinced that wine can only be good if the land, the soil and the environment are treated well. And the success is impressive: the wines from Poggerino have already been honoured with numerous awards and benevolent reviews by wine magazines and connoisseurs.
The Fattoria Poggerino: a piece of pure and genuine Tuscany
Fattoria Poggerino is idyllically situated as if in its own little valleynly a few kilometres away from the small but well known village of Radda in Chianti - namely in the heart of Chianti Classico. Since 1999 the siblings Piero and Benedetta Lanza have been taking care of the 43 hectares of land and the buildings of Fattoria Poggerino. Vineyards and vegetable gardens are cultivated according to organic guidelines. Piero is the one who decides that - after all he is an experienced agronomist and oenologist. The Bed & Breakfast, which belongs to the winery and is housed in an 18th century building, is run by Piero’s sister Benedetta. She was also the one who furnished the rooms in a beautiful, typically rustical Tuscan style. So that you can just feel good. Benedetta also takes care of the magnificent garden, where you can relax by the pool. A little secret tip for all Poggerino guests: Benedetta is also an excellent cook. And from time to time she also prepares dinner for the guests. If you have other plans for one of these evenings, cancel them quickly! Because a meal from Benedetta shoud not to be missed!

Folgt man von Radda in Chianti kommend der kleinen Straße mit der schlichten Bezeichnung „Strada Provinziale 72“, die sich sanft durch die Hügel schlängelt, gelangt man nach einigen Minuten Fahrt zur Einfahrt der Fattoria Poggerino. Vorbei an den Weinkellern kommt man schließlich zum Tasting Room, der gleichzeitig auch als Büro fungiert. Hier wird man meistens von John begrüßt, der sich auf Poggerino ums Organisatorische kümmert. Von der Zimmerreservierung im Bed & Breakfast über die Abwicklung von Weinbestellungen aus aller Welt bis hin zur Begrüßung der Gäste.
Denn die Inhaber der Fattoria Poggerino sind die oft unterwegs: Piero Lanza, der Agronom und Önologe in einer Person ist, ist rumpelt entweder mit seinem Mazda-Pick-up durch die Weinberge oder er tüftelt und feilt im Weinkeller an seinen Weinen. Benedetta, Pieros Schwester und Miteigentümerin von Poggerino, werkt im Bed & Breakfast, das in einem Gebäude aus dem 18. Jahrhundert untergebracht ist. Hier gibt es immer was zu tun – und manchmal kocht Benedetta auch für die Gäste. Ein Genuss der Extraklasse, den man sich nicht entgehen lassen darf. Vieles von dem, was dabei auf den Tisch kommt, wächst und gedeiht direkt in den Gemüsegärten von Poggerino. Dafür verantwortlich: Stefano, der Piero außerdem in Keller und Berg zur Hand geht. Übrigens: Dieser Mann ist Italiens Kürbis-König. Denn er hat mit einem Gewicht von unglaublichen 849 Kilo Italiens größten Kürbis gezüchtet.
Eichen-Fass oder Zement-Ei: Rotweine zum Verlieben!
Auf 11 von 12 Hektar Rebfläche der Fattoria Poggerino wächst Sangiovese, auf nur einem Hektar Merlot. Mit der Konsequenz, dass das Sortiment sehr Sangiovese-lastig, dabei aber trotzdem abwechslungsreich ist. Natürlich sind da zuallererst der Chianti Classico und die Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla – beide zu 100 Prozent Sangiovese. Eine Besonderheit ist sicher der zweite Chianti Classico (N)Uovo. Besonders insofern, als dieser Wein nicht im Fass, sondern in einem überdimensionalen Ei aus Zement, das ein Fassungsvermögen von ca. 650 Litern hat, heranreift. Und dann gibt es noch den Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso, den trinkfreudigen Hauswein. (N)Uovo und Labirinto übrigens ebenfalls „solo Sangiovese“. Der einzige Poggerino-Wein, für den die Trauben der internationalen Rebsorte Merlot zum Einsatz kommen, ist der Primamateria – der Supertuscan im Sortiment. Ebenfalls im Sortiment finden sich der Rosato Aurora, ein 100%iger Sangiovese-Spumante sowie ein Olivenöl extra vergine. Und ganz nebenbei erwähnt: Alles bio, versteht sich. Das ist Piero ein großes Anliegen.
