If a Chianti Classico wine smells like cherries and dark berries, accompanied by spices, if it has an elegant acid-tannin structure and is as smooth as it can be, then this wine may be the one from Poggio al Sole!

Chianti Classico DOCG from Poggio al Sole
So simple, so beautiful, so typical Chianti Classico!
The Chianti Classico from Poggio al Sole is exactly what you expect from a typical, really beautiful Chianti Classico: simply classic. However, from the first sip of this wine you can notice that very experienced hands have worked in the vineyard as well as in the cellar. No wonder since Johannes Davaz who runs the winery together with his wife Kathrin comes from a traditional Swiss winemaking family. Moreover Johannes is agronomist and oenologist at once - in other words, the red wine bears his signature from the flowering of the grapes to what ends up in the bottle. This Chianti Classico is also very classic in the composition of the grapes: 90 percent Sangiovese rounded off by five percent Canaiolo and five percent Merlot. By the way, all with organic origin! The grapes are harvested by hand depending on the weather between the end of September and the beginning of October and then placed in stainless steel tanks for about two weeks for vinification. Chianti Classico then matures for about a year in barriques and stainless steel tanks, followed by a few months in the bottle. Every year Poggio al Sole bottles about 40,000 bottles of this wonderful Chianti Classico.
Wine, oil & Co: everything for the connoisseur's heart!
In addition to the main protagonist in the range - the Chianti Classico, seven other wines are produced at Poggio al Sole. At first a white wine called Chiara, made from 80 percent Chardonnay and 20 percent Bianco di Sangiovese. There is also a Rosato: a 100% Sangiovese wine with the spring-fresh name Primavera followed by five other very different red wines. First there is the Gran Selezione Casasilia - the top wine from Poggio al Sole, also one hundred percent Sangiovese. Another red wine in the range is the Trafiore - a 100% Canaiolo that is as fragrant as the "fiore" (the flowers) and as the Canaiolo grapes themselves. In the the Syrah IGT come one hundred percent Syrah grapes and nothing more. Only much much love and lots of Tuscany! The Trittico, the house wine of Poggio al Sole, consists - as the name suggests - of three grape varieties: 70 percent Sangiovese, 15 percent Merlot and 15 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Poggio al Sole's range of red wines is rounded off by Seraselva, an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. And since there are around 1,500 olive trees growing at the property, Poggio al Sole also produces a really good extra virgin olive oil.
A winery in the heart of Chianti Classico with a long tradition
The Poggio al Sole winery covers an area of 70 hectares between the towns of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti. The name means as much as "hill in the sun". And this hill also adorns the labels of all Poggio al Sole wines - in a stylised form, of course. Since 1990 the winery has been owned by the Swiss winemakers Kathrin and Johannes Davaz. Johannes, who is agronomist and oenologist, comes from a Swiss winemaking family rich in tradition. And even the estate itself, which was called Casasilia until 1969, enjoy a long wine tradition: before that it belonged to the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey. Documents in the archives of the abbey show that wine and olives were cultivated here already in the 12th century. Today the vineyards of Poggio al Sole extend over 24 hectares of gently undulating vineyards with south-east to south-west exposure. The first Italian wine of the two Swiss winemakers was produced here in 1991. Today Valentino - the oldest of the four sons of the winemakers, lives with his family at Poggio al Sole.
Agriturismo holidays at the heart of the Davaz family vineyard
Poggio al Sole is a real family business. And that's exactly what you feel if you spend your holidays here: it feels a bit like a second home! Four spacious holiday apartments and a lovingly furnished double room are available for holiday-makers. From the upper side of the "Poggio" - from the hill - you can enjoy a fabulous view over the gently undulating vineyards, the woods and valleys up to the neighbouring winery - Rignana and up to the abbey Badia a Passignano. The view from the pool is also breathtaking and is located right next to the historic house in a typical Tuscany style amidst the vineyards and olive trees. A jump in the cool water is the ideal refreshment after a trip to nearby Panzano in Chianti or after a sightseeing or shopping trip to Siena or Florence.
