Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico DOCG
Chianti Classico DOCG: leading actor in the "shades of red" category
The main actor of the Rocca di Montegrossi winery’s range is undoubtedly the Chianti Classico - simply because it accounts for the lion’s share of production in terms of quantity. And even though this wine is the product of Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, owner of the Rocca di Montegrossi winery, a man whose family has always had "Chianti in the blood", it is anything but old-fashioned. Actually Baron Bettino Ricasoli is famous as the "co-inventor" of modern the Chianti Classico. With its 90 percent Sangiovese and 5 percent Canaiolo and Colorino this red wine taste 100 percent Tuscany, and reveals its unmistakable terroir! The grapes are harvested by hand in several stages, each at the optimum ripeness of each variety. Depending on the vintage, and after first fermentation in cement tanks for three weeks, the young wine matures in large Allier oak barrels for about 12 to 15 months. Ruby red, violet reflections, purple, deep red - depending on the vintage the Chianti Classico reveals to the observer these "Shades of Red" . And those who lower their nose into the glass will be enchanted by the scent of cherries, sour cherries and wild berries - and of course by the violet scent so typical for Sangiovese. Even after the first sip, the red wine keeps its olfactory promises: fruity, juicy, and harmonious, with silky tannins. The storage potential of this Chianti Classico could certainly be long - if only it wouldn’t taste so damn good…
Rocca di Montegrossi: a winery between tradition and future
Viticulture has a long tradition in Monti in Chianti, a small village near the Castello di Brolio in the centre of "historic" Chianti. Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, owner of the Rocca di Montegrossi winery, enjoys the background of a long family history. The noble Ricasoli family has always been linked to the region and wine production, not only thanks to Bettino Ricasoli who laid down the first production rules for Chianti Classico. The Rocca di Montegrossi winery has been owned by Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi for about twenty years. It is located just next to the Castello di Brolio. Over the years he has modernised the agronomic work and invested in the cellar technology. In addition, the winery has been managed according to organic principles for several years - since 2010 it has also been officially certified as an organic estate.
Red wine, rosato, vin santo & olio: the assortment - a piece of Tuscany
Under the direction of Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi and in collaboration with the oenologist Attilio Pagli, red wines in both traditional and international styles have been produced for some twenty years here. Both styles with the unique aim to express the terroir of Monti in Chianti. In addition to the two typical representatives of the appellation - the light Chianti Classico and the expressive Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto San Marcellino, comes the absolutely outstanding Vin Santo. It is a product of years long and very careful work. But also the super tuscan Geremia, influenced by the two international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, clearly shows its origins in the glass. Rocca di Montegrossi’s Rosato is a great pleasure especially in the summer months. It reflects the freshness and lightness of the Chianti Classico lifestyle. And what of course belongs to everyday life in Tuscany: olive oil of the highest quality and best taste.
Vine and grape: the roots of good taste
In Monti in Chianti there are extraordinarily good conditions not only for Sangiovese, which is the most important grape variety in Tuscany. In addition to the main grape variety Sangiovese ( a Chianti Classico should consisit of at least 80 per cent of which), Rocca di Montegrossi also has other authoctonous grape varieties of Chianti such as Pugnitello, Canaiolo and Colorino. In order to express the great potential of Monti in Chianti, Marco has decided to plant the two international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from which the super tuscan Geremia is made of. The white wine Malvasia Bianca di Toscana is also found in the vineyards of Rocca di Montegrossi. The soil, the microclimate - the entire terroir - offer the best conditions for producing the exceptional quality that is so typical for Rocca di Montegrossi.

Tasting notes by vintage of Rocca di Montegrossi wines
2014 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Deep dark with violet reflexes in the glass. The first impression in the nose is elegant, beautiful, very typical for Chianti Classico. The aroma is reminiscent of dark fruit aromas, fully ripe cherries and plums. Blueberries and blackberries together with delicate roasted aromas reminiscent of dark chocolate. And now the first sip: wow! The expectations that the world press had for this vintage were not really the best. But this wine is the best sign that one should not throw all into a pot. This Chianti Classico from Rocca di Montegrossi is fruity with mild tannins and well integrated acidity. In addition to the fruit aromas in the nose, there are also delicate citrus aromas, accompanied by mild spiciness. Beautiful, persistent pressure on the palate, elegant body, after a while also black tea and liquorice aromas show up. We have to take our hat off to Marco, the owner, and to enjoy this wine in his own spirit.
2013 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Great color! Purple with violet reflections, with a very dark core. The Chianti Classico 2013 from Rocca di Montegrossi is reminiscent of many fruits, such as plums, blueberries and blackberries, but also light citrus aromas. Spice, cinnamon, cloves and pepper. When drunk this red wine from Monti in Chianti presents itself with strong and full body, the fruit aromas in the nose show up as well on the palate. Supported by clear and firm tannins with a well integrated acidity. The typical aromas of black tea, liquorice and dark chocolate are also evident. The final is sensational, long and full of character.
2011 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
In the nose, the entire seductive fruit and spice bouquet of a Chianti Classico: cherries, sour cherries, blackberries, blueberries, plums, pepper, juniper and delicate citrus notes. Very, very typical. On the palate these aromas again, in combination with almost soft tannins and a very suitable acidity. The acid-tannin structure is very balanced. Full-bodied and elegant, very animating, fruity and lively.
2010 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Dark ruby red with violet reflections in the glass. Only to see that makes you hungry. In the nose there are aromas of red berries, cherries and sour cherries and the typical violet scent of Sangiovese. It is a great pleasure to smell and makes you expect a lot. Then - on the palate - the fruits from the nose show up again, mineral and spicy notes, a harmoniously embedded acid and tannin structure, honest elegance and persistence. The often quoted word terroir is one hundred percent correct here. This "Vino Chianti Classico" brings simply fun and tastes good!
2009 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Ruby red par excellence. In the nose plenty of cherries, sour cherries and wild berries in combination with fine spices. After the first taste this Chianti Classico presents itself fruity, with the aromas mentioned in the nose, juicy, harmonious, with silky tannins. The linear tannin-acid structure is the backbone of this wine, whose potential storage would certainly be long. However, one quickly notices that only one sip is not enough ...
