Rocca di Montegrossi Geremia Toscana Rosso IGT
A real super tuscan with noble roots
The Geremia Toscana Rosso IGT is a true super tuscan in the family of Montegrossi wines. And family is particularly important in the context of this wine: Geremia was the founder of the Ricasoli noble family, of which the owner of Rocca di Montegrossi, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, also comes from. These special drops are pressed exclusively from international grape varieties: it usually consists of two thirds Merlot and one third Cabernet Sauvignon - depending on the vintage in a slightly different ratio. And Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi thus provides clear proof that in the heart of Chianti Classico - after all in the oldest wine-growing region in the world - even foreign varieties feel much at home and wines of the highest quality can be produced. Of course, always with a focus to express the special terroir of Monti in Chianti. After careful manual harvesting, the grapes are fermented in steel and cement tanks for about twenty days at a controlled temperature of about 26 degrees. This is followed by 28 months of ageing in new and used Allier oak barrels and tuns, and at least another 18 months of bottle ageing. After opening a bottle, the aromas that meet the nose and palate are intense. Dark berries, spice, mineral wine with Bordeaux structure and Tuscany aroma. From this super tuscan are fillet around 15,000 bottles per year - also in magnum and double magnum format. A must for all lovers of Italian red wines!
Between Florence and Siena: a winery with history
Monti in Chianti is certainly one of the very special places for wine-growing in Chianti Classico, the appellation between Florence and Siena in the middle of Tuscany. Here you can find numerous proofs of a millenium-old history and still today numerous renowned wineries in the immediate proximity. This also includes the Rocca di Montegrossi winery, which is certified organic. The owner of the estate, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, is a descendant of the Ricasoli noble family, the family that invented the "recipe" for Chianti Classico and thus had a decisive influence on the history of viticulture in Tuscany. Today the family is still based in the Castello di Brolio in Gaiole in Chianti - in the immediate proximity of Rocca di Montegrossi. This fact alone makes Marco very closely linked to its land, the Rocca di Montegrossi winery.
Monti in Chianti: the best place for red wine in Tuscany
The close bond between Marco and its 100 hectares of land is exemplified by the name of the super tuscan in his range: Geremia - the name of the wine - was the first of the Ricasoli family to settle in Chianti. 20 hectares are planted with vineyards at Rocca di Montegrossi. The vineyards are on a hilly land with a south-eastern exposition at an altitude of between 340 and 510 metres above sea level. Sangiovese, the leading variety of Chianti Classico, is cultivated on an area of 13 hectares. But also the autochthonous grape varieties Canaiolo, Colorino, Pugnitello and Malvasia Bianco di Toscana can be found here. The international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon occupy only a small part of the vineyards. The winery has been officially certified as an organic estate since 2010. Sustainability is also a major issue: rainwater is used as process water and solar panels generate electricity for the company’s own needs.
A colourful range of wines: from ruby red to amber to flamingo-pink
The Chianti Classico certainly plays the leading role in the Rocca di Montegrossi range. The Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione expresses the elegance and complexity of old vines. International is the Geremia, a super tuscan blended from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nevertheless, it expresses wonderfully the diversity of the Monti terroir in Chianti. Not to forget: the fruity fresh Rosato, companion through mild summer days and nights. The flagship of Rocca di Montegrossi, however, is the delicious Vin Santo, in an outstanding quality that is rarely found. No wonder that the production process of this treasure extends over more than six years.

Wine Spectator | 92 Punkte "A concentrated and complex version, this reveals black cherry, blackberry, thyme and oak spice flavors. Firmly structured and long, with a vibrant structure lending support. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2019 through 2032. 1,250 cases made." – BS |
James Suckling | 92 Punkte "This is a little old school with lots of concentrated fruit and toasted oak. Dried flowers, too. Full body, chewy and fresh. Drink in 2020 to allow the tannins to soften." |

Veronelli | 96 Punkte / |
Wine Spectator | 90 Punkte "Shows more finesse than power, featuring well-defined flavors of black cherry, currant, tobacco and tea. The finish is beefy, with tealike tannins holding court. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2020. 850 cases made." – BS |
James Suckling | 93 Punkte "Lots of blackberry, black currant and mineral aromas that follow through to a full body, that's tight and silky. Shows pretty length and texture. Very finely crafted. Drink in 2018." |
Vinous | 96 Punkte "The 2012 Geremia (Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot) is the highlight in this range, and also one of the best wines I tasted during my recent trip through Chianti Classico. Deep, dense and brooding, the 20012 is another wine that will require considerable time to come into focus. Today it possesses exceptional depth, power and intensity, all of which will allow it to age effortlessly for many years. With time in the glass, scents of lavender, sage, menthol and licorice start to open up, but the 2012 needs time. This is an absolutely stellar wine from Rocca di Montegrossi and proprietor Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi." - Antonio Galloni |

L'Espresso | |
Wine Spectator | 90 Punkte "A powerful red, this remains smooth in texture and focused, delivering plum, black cherry, savory and mineral flavors. The acidity and dusty tannins drive the finish, which echoes the savory elements. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2022. 800 cases made." – BS |
Jancis Robinson | 16,5 Punkte "70% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. 24 months in French barriques and 18 months in bottle. Unfiltered. Dark garnet. Even though this is a Bordeaux blend, it somehow smells Italian – there’s dark fruit, some cedary notes but also a savoury meaty note. The alcohol shows a little on the nose. Deliciously rich and deep in fruit with clear freshness on the finish. I would have scored it more highly if the alcohol had not seemed so much in evidence." (JH) |
James Suckling | 93 Punkte "A soft and rich Super Tuscan with lots of juicy and ripe fruit. Very reminiscent of the New World with its fruit-forward character. Full body, velvety tannins and a flavorful finish. A Napa-inspired blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold." |
Vinous | 95 Punkte "The 2011 Geremia, the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, offers tons of energy to balance its dark, inky fruit. Lavender, menthol, melted road tar, sage, crème de cassis and grilled herbs are some of the many signatures. The ripeness and raciness of the year come through in spades, yet there is an element of pulsating intensity in the glass that plays off the more overt elements nicely. This is another superb showing from Rocca di Montegrossi." - Antonio Galloni |

Wine Spectator | 94 Punkte "Dark, concentrated and tannic, this red is extracted, offering a core of sweet fruit and pure black cherry and blackberry flavors that linger on the tough finish, with a salty aftertaste. For fans of the style. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2017 through 2030. 700 cases made." – BS |
Vinous | 95 Punkte "The 2010 Geremia, Rocca di Montegrossi's Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is utterly magnificent. Lavender, plums, cloves and violets literally jump from the glass. The flavors are bright, focused and vibrant to the core, all with a stunning sense of energy and pure class. The 2010 looks to have a very bright future. What a gorgeous wine this is. Geremia is 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon." - Antonio Galloni |
Falstaff | 95 Punkte "Sattes, leuchtendes Rubinviolett. Eröffnet in der Nase mit satten Noten nach Tabak, dann viel reife Brombeere, Cassis, Lakritze. Zeigt am Mund griffiges, dichtmaschiges Tannin, saftige dunkelbeerige Frucht, baut sich in vielen Schichten auf, im Finale fester Druck, bleibt trotz Konzentration sehr gut trinkbar." |
