Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG from Rocca di Montegrossi
Vigneto San Marcellino
This outstanding Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is named after a building rather than a person: the church of San Marcellino was built in 1,000 A.D. on the site of today’s Rocca di Montegrossi vineyard. The vines that grow right next to the church are more than 45 years old and provide the 95 per cent of Sangiovese grapes for the Gran Selezione. In addition, a touch of Pugnitello grapes is subjoined. This is also an autochthonous grape variety from Tuscany, which was almost forgotten in the 80`s. The grape shape reminds of a fist, Italian "pugno", hence the name Pugnitello. Today Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi, owner of Rocca di Montegrossi, is aware of the importance of this small berry grape. Sangiovese wines can sometimes appear quite square and angular due to their acid and tannin structure. The "fist" of Pugnitello soothes these properties and supports the effect of Sangiovese. The alcoholic fermentation takes place for about two weeks at a controlled temperature of 28 to 30 degrees in cement tanks. The wine is aged for at least 25 months in new and used oak barrels - barrels and tuns made of Allier oak. After bottling, the wine is left to mature in the cellar for at least 18 months. The result of this lengthy work: the flavor reveals a fruity, dense network of aromas, ranging from ripe cherries to plums and dark berries. Accompanied by an elegant spice and a self-confident minerality. On the palate, the wine draws from the full: much spice, dark fruits, firm tannins, harmonious, with beautiful, perfectly integrated acidity. There is nothing missing! Or actually only one thing: the quantity! Only just under 6,000 bottles of this top wine are produced each year - but also in magnum size. This red wine can compete with the great wines of the world.
Monti in Chianti: in the heart of historic Chianti Classico
Monti in Chianti is a small village located about seven kilometres south of Gaiole in Chianti, in the heart of the oldest appellation in the world. Here, in the centre of "historic" Chianti, Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi runs the Rocca di Montegrossi winery. If there were a classification by region and location in Italy, Monti in Chianti – like the French tradition - would undoubtedly be one of the "grand crus" of the area. The terroir, i.e. the combination of soil and microclimate, offers excellent conditions for Sangiovese and all other grape varieties grown at the winery, which has been organically managed and certified for several years. About 20 hectares of land are planted with vines. The autochthonous grape varieties Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino and Pugnitello are represented, as well as the international grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which come for the super tuscan Geremia. A white wine variety, the Malvasia Bianco di Toscana, grows here as well.
Rocca di Montegrossi: a vineyard with noble roots
Marco Ricasoli-Firidolfi comes from the oldest noble family of Tuscany, which is considered the "inventor" of the Chianti formula and which today still has its family seat in the Castello di Brolio - not far from the winery of Rocca di Montegrossi. This is not the only reason why Marco feels strongly connected to the Chianti region - and in particular to Monti, of course - with its rolling hills, the Chianti Classico wine tradition and the culture of the region. He loves how he lives and where he lives. And you can feel that in his wines, too: in addition to the Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione there is a powerful and elegant Chianti Classico, the noble, structured super tuscan with the name Geremia, a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, and a fruity and spicy Rosato are part of the assortment of Rocca di Montegrossi. The Vin Santo produced on Rocca di Montegrossi is outstanding, a true delicacy and preciousness at the same time. And last but not least: the fruity spicy olive oil Olio Extra Vergine di Oliva.

2011 Rocca di Montegrossi Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
Radiant purple colour in the glass makes you curious and at the same time happy about this 2011 San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. From the glass flow aromas reminiscent of ripe, dark fruits and berries, such as plums, blueberries and black currants, accompanied by spices reminiscent of pepper, juniper and cloves. Delicate roast aromas are still to be found in this aroma intoxication, and also a little the smell of raisins. On the palate a wonderful impression, with beautiful pressure, full body. This Gran Selezione is masterly, self-confident and noble at the same time. In addition to fruity and spicy aromas (as in the nose) there is also a fine minerality and aromas reminiscent of tea, liquorice and dark chocolate. This aromatic play is supported by fine tannins and an elegant acidity. And infinite reverberation in the finish ....
2010 Rocca di Montegrossi Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico Gran Selezione
Optically brilliant. The eye drinks too. Many aromas emerge from the glass, reminiscent of plums, blackberries, blueberries, black currants, ripe cherries, pink grapefruit and pleasant spices. Delicate smoke aromas underline this warm dark berry character. And then bitter chocolate flashes out when the glass is swivelled. After the first sip, the fruity aromas of the nose are presented again, they work together very balanced and harmonious, and are carried by a lively acidity, firm but unobtrusive tannins and a self-confident body. And then liquorice and black tea are added in the finish. This is Sangiovese (with Pugnitello) from the subject "high art", and is thank God not only for viewing, but for ENJOYMENT.
2009 Rocca di Montegrossi Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico
It is very modern and in our time it is common to speak and write in superlatives. But in this 2009 San Marcellino Chianti Classico, it's hard not to fall for the tasting notes. But one after the other.
Impressive deep dark purple, dense and full. In the nose a bouquet of fruits, spices and the memory of a forest walk: plums, blackberries, blueberries, dark cherries, figs, a touch of citrus, pepper, juniper, liquorice, soft leather, grape-nut chocolate. Silky soft on the tongue. Simply everything is perfect: fruit, spice, minerality, body, structure, strength, length. Here a very large orchestra of aromas plays in perfect harmony.
2008 Rocca di Montegrossi Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico
Impressive. You'd almost like to say you've flashed. But one thing at a time. We are talking about the 2008 vintage, and yet after almost 8 years of ripening, this wine still presents itself so incredibly youthful. In the nose there is a dense fruity aroma reminiscent of ripe cherries, plums, blackberries, blueberries and black currants. Accompanied by an elegant spice and a self-confident minerality. But the longer this San Marcellino is in the glass, the longer it lasts, the stronger the aroma of forest honey becomes. On the palate the wine plays with the whole: much spice, dark fruits, firm tannins, but not threatening, harmonious, beautiful, perfectly integrated acidity, minerality. Structure. Elegance. Just aristocratic. Nothing is missing, only unfortunately sufficient quantity. Only 5,900 bottles were produced from this vintage. Too bad.
2007 Rocca di Montegrossi Vigneto San Marcellino Chianti Classico
Dark ruby red makes you to want more this extraordinary Chianti Classico. The first smell into the glass reveals aromas of dark berries, such as very ripe blackberries and blueberries. But also fully ripe cherries. It smells elegantly combined with delicate minerality, juicy. The first sip will tell you that your nose wasn't wrong. Again these wonderful fruity aromas, combined with delicate spices. The first sip keeps what the nose promised: dark, very ripe fruits, a dense tannin, fine-meshed, fine acid structure. The firm pressure at the back reveals that there is still a lot to be expected over the years.

Vinous | 94 points "Rocca di Montegrossi's 2012 Chianti Classico Vigneto San Marcellino is impressive, but it is going to need a good few years at a minimum to even start drinking well. Dense, primary and totally unevolved, the 2012 is a wine of potential at this stage. A host of dark cherry, smoke, plum and flowers gradually opens up in the glass. Vertical in build and concentrated on the palate, the 2012 has huge upside for those who can wait." - Antonio Galloni |

Rich and ample on the palate, the 2011 offers striking depth and nuance, along with terrific freshness for the year. Graphite, melted road tar, cloves and leather are some of the many notes that inform the virile finish. This dramatic, large-scaled Chianti Classico needs time, but it is immensely promising." - Antonio Galloni |

Jancis Robinson | 17 points "95% Sangiovese, 5% Pugnitello. Organic. 28 months in barriques (49%) and tonneaux (51%) but only 10% new wood. 24 months in bottle.Dark, meaty red fruit with plenty of spice and hint of oak sweetness (spice and vanilla). Lots of lifted cherry fruit. Thick, chewy texture, suggesting it needs a bit more time. Very good concentration. Masses of everything but all in harmony. I think it would be better with another year in bottle." (JH) |

Robert Parker | 92 points "The 2007 Chianti Classico San Marcellino is a deep, dense wine with serious structure. The fruit is dark and inward, but over time the blackest of cherries, smoke, incense, minerals, earthiness and tar emerge in the glass. Far from an easygoing 2007, the San Marcellino needs at least a handful of years in the cellar, after which it should drink beautifully. The San Marcellino is 95% Sangiovese and 5% Pugnitello that spent 18 months in Allier oak (24% new), the traces of which need time to integrate. A touch of heat on the finish is borderline distracting, which is pretty much the only thing that keeps the score from going higher." |
