Italy celebrates the public holiday: 70 years of the "Festa della Repubblica"
In 1948, the Italian government introduced the "Festa della Repubblica", Italy's national holiday, on June 2. This year, Italy is not only celebrating its national holiday on this day, but also the 70th anniversary of this holiday...
Italy's national holiday on June 2
June 2 was introduced as a national holiday to commemorate the referendum of June 2, 1946. At that time, the majority of Italians voted in favor of the introduction of a republic and against retaining the monarchy as a form of government. As a result, the members of the Savoy royal family had to go into exile - Italy became a republic. Fun fact on the subject of Italian continuity: between 1977 (law of March 5, 1977) and 2000 (law of November 22, 2000), the national holiday was celebrated on the first Sunday in June, only since then has it been celebrated on June 2.
Of stars, planes and the three Italian colors
Just like the national color "Savoy blue" or the "Stella d'Italia" (Star of Italy), one of Italy's oldest national symbols, the "Tricolore" - the national flag with its three vertical stripes in green, white and red - is one of the official and unofficial state symbols of the Italian Republic, as is the "Frecce Tricolori" flying squadron. And it goes without saying that these symbols are celebrated to the full, especially on the national holiday. Since 1948, a military parade has been held at the Imperial Forums in Rome in honor of the Republic. The Italian Air Force aerobatic squadrons, the so-called "Frecce Tricolori" (which means "three-colored arrows" in German), fly over the forums. They draw the three colors of the Italian flag in the sky of Rome. In addition to this parade, a laurel wreath is also laid on the Altar of the Fatherland in Rome on this day in honor of the unknown soldier. The gates of the gardens of the Quirinal Palace, the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic, which are otherwise not open to the public, will also be opened to visitors on this day. Performances by music groups from the navy, air force, army, Guardia di Finanza, Carabinieri and Polizia di Stato complete the "Festa della Repubblia".
Nina tip: Tricolore á la Toscana
If you want to celebrate the Italian national holiday "á la Toscana", I have a special Nina tip for you: one of the many excellent extra virgin olive oils from the Chianti Classico region stands for green. Simply enjoy with Pane Sciocco, the unsalted Tuscan white bread - perfetto! The red is - naturalmente - one of the many Chianti Classico or one of the many other top reds from the region. The white is represented by the rare white wines from the Chianti Classico - such as the Biancolo or its big brother, Il Bianco, from the Gagliole winery.... With this in mind: #NinaInChianti wishes you a happy tricolor national holiday! And salute
