New at Nina in Chianti: The wines of Fattoria Poggerino from Radda in Chianti!
As you know, I am always on the lookout for new wineries and exciting wines from the Chianti Classico region. And so, during one of my last visits to a trade fair, I "stumbled" across a wine, or actually a winery, during a blind tasting that made a lasting impression on me. This winery is the Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti. And now the time has come: the excellent Poggerino wines are now also available to buy in the online store!
Fattoria Poggerino: Excellent wines & friendly people!
When I think of Fattoria Poggerino , two things immediately come to mind: first of all, of course, the excellent wines that Piero Lanza, the owner of Fattoria Poggerino, produces with great dedication and passion. And then I think of the beautiful bed & breakfast run by Benedetta, Piero's sister.
It's the people who make Poggerino so special. There is John, for example, who takes care of everything organizational with great patience and warmth and with a big smile on his lips at all times: from welcoming the guests to handling wine orders from all over the world to patiently answering all my questions... (Thank you, John!)
And then, of course, there is Stefano. He gives Piero a hand in the vineyard and cellar and is responsible for everything that grows and thrives in the gardens. He is also a passionate pumpkin grower. Poggerino owes Italy's largest pumpkin, weighing no less than 849 kilos, to Stefano's green fingers. And it's all organic - of course! Which, incidentally, also applies to the wines.
Sangiovese wines with their own style and innovative style
But let's get back to the most important thing: the wines! Basically, the following applies to Poggerino: Her Majesty the Sangiovese reigns here! The autochthonous Tuscan grape variety grows on 11 out of 12 hectares of cultivated land. There is also one hectare of Merlot - and finito. This emphasis on Sangiovese is naturally also reflected in the wine range.
However, the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo is a specialty among the Poggerino wines. This is because it is a Chianti Classico that is not aged in oak barrels, as is usually the case, but in a cement egg. And as different as that may sound at first: this wine is fantastic! A Sangiovese wine par excellence! If you would like to find out more about this special way of producing Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, you should take a look at the detailed wine description.
Of course, the Poggerino range also includes a "normal" Chianti Classico and a Chianti Classico Riserva called "Bugialla". The Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso is another classic IGT - the house wine, so to speak. But all these reds have one thing in common: They are made from 100 percent Sangiovese.
The Merlot grapes are used for Poggerino's Supertuscan - the "Primamateria". Piero blends Merlot and Sangiovese in a 50:50 ratio.
Radda in Chianti: (almost) new territory for Nina in Chianti
I am well aware that with Fattoria Poggerino I have a winery from Radda in Chianti in my range for the first time. That I am venturing a little further beyond the borders of "my" Panzano. But: Radda, with its somewhat more rugged hills and edgier wines, brings a new facet to my range.
Above all, Fattoria Poggerino is a winery that produces products of the very highest quality. And that's exactly what I stand for with NinaInChianti.com: for Nina-tested top quality. Because of course I have personally tasted all the wines that you can now find in the store! With this in mind: Salute! Benvenuto Poggerino!
