Radda in Chianti

The Fattoria Poggerino

Fattoria Poggerino, located in Radda in Chianti, is owned by Benedetta and Piero Lanza. They come from the old noble Florentine family with the illustrious name of Prince Ginori Conti. Piero and Benedetta's mother, Contessa Floriana, inherited the Poggerino winery from her father in the 1970s. Together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, she began producing Chianti Classico under the Poggerino label in 1980. In 1999, her mother finally handed over the winery to her two children.

Like a book

Poggerino, which lies in a small "valley within a valley" near Radda in Chianti, covers an area of 43 hectares, covered with vines, olive trees and woodland. The steeply sloping slopes, which open up towards Radda like the pages of a book, are surrounded by woods. After the hours of sunshine during the day in the south-west facing locations, the forest provides the necessary cooling at night. This unique microclimate creates a balance between fruit and sweetness. Poggerino's vineyards cover a total area of 12 hectares - 11 hectares are planted with Sangiovese at an altitude of 400 to 500 meters, the rest with Merlot. Piero clearly focuses on the autochthonous grape variety of Tuscany. The soil in the Poggerino vineyards is very stony Galestro.

All organic? Logical!

For Piero, it goes without saying that the vineyards and vegetable garden at Poggerino are cultivated according to organic principles. What's more, the agronomist repeatedly incorporates individual biodynamic measures into his work in the vineyard. He is convinced that the wine will be good if the land, the soil and the environment are treated well. His success not only proves him right in terms of wine - numerous awards and favorable reviews from wine magazines and connoisseurs speak for themselves: Stefano Cutrupi, responsible for the gardens and vegetable garden at Poggerino, has grown Italy's largest pumpkin here. The mega organic pumpkin weighed an incredible 849 kilos!

The range

On the one hand, Fattoria Poggerino presents a very traditional range: two wines bear the Chianti Classico label - the classic Chianti Classico, which is matured in large oak barrels, and the Nuovo, a Chianti Classico that is matured in an egg-shaped cement tank. The range is completed by the Chianti Classico Riserva "Bugialla", which also matures in large oak barrels. All three wines are made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes. The "Primamateria" is the house's Supertuscan and consists of a blend of around 50:50 Merlot and Sangiovese grapes, which grow on Poggerino. The range is rounded off by the fruity, fresh Rosato, called Aurora, which is also made from pure Sangiovese grapes."

Innovative out of the egg

Poggerino is also doing a lot of innovative things: a particular highlight is the "Chianti Classico (N)Uovo", which matures in a man-sized egg made of cement with a capacity of around 650 liters. What seems unusual at first glance turns out to be extremely innovative on closer inspection: the cement combines all the positive properties of wood without transferring its potentially detrimental influences such as excessive wood aromas. In addition, cement offers a number of advantages, such as excellent temperature control and gentle micro-oxidation, which give the wine exceptional balance and finesse. The result is a sensational Chianti Classico that showcases the Sangiovese grape in its purest and most precise form. The fine structure and intense fruit of this wine make it a true masterpiece that will delight connoisseurs and enthusiasts alike."

Chianti Classico & dream vacation

And so it came about that Piero, who is an agronomist and trained oenologist, takes care of the winery - from the smallest vine seedling to the grapes to the bottle - and Benedetta runs the Bed & Breakfast belonging to the winery. A very informal B&B - with beautiful rooms furnished in typical rustic Tuscan style, with a fantastic pool in the middle of a green garden paradise. Benedetta, an excellent cook, also prepares dinner for her guests from time to time. If you have other plans, you should cancel them very quickly - you won't regret it. A dinner from Benedetta is definitely not to be missed!
