Poggio al Sole
"Poggio al Sole" translates as "hill in the sun". And this brings us directly to the winery that adorns itself with this resounding name: Poggio al Sole, which is owned by the Swiss Davaz family, is located at the highest point of a sun-drenched hill in the middle of the unique Chianti Classico landscape. Or to be more precise: the estate extends between the villages of Tavarnelle Val di Pesa and Greve in Chianti over a total area of 70 hectares. Today, the vineyards of Poggio al Sole extend over 24 hectares of gently undulating vineyards facing south-east to south-west around the estate.
Winery with tradition
Johannes, who is both an agronomist and oenologist, comes from a well-known Swiss winegrowing family. Poggio al Sole also looks back on a long tradition: the archives of the nearby Badia a Passignano Abbey contain documents that prove that wine and olives were already being cultivated here in the 12th century. In 1990, Kathrin and Johannes bought the winery "following a spontaneous intuition" and have been continuously expanding it ever since. For some years now, they have been actively supported by their son Valentino and his wife Steffi, both in the winery and in the agriturismo.
Thinking laterally and ahead
An average of 100,000 bottles of wine are bottled each year at Poggio al Sole, which always strives to treat nature and its resources with care. This starts with the company's own electricity from a solar power system and extends to the sustainable cultivation of the vineyards. All wines have been certified organic since the 2016 vintage. The fact that Johannes is also a real lateral and forward thinker from time to time is also demonstrated by the fact that he uses his own pruning method: "Albarello modificato". While two or four shoots are usually left standing when pruning, Johannes is convinced that three is exactly the right number for the optimal development of vines and grapes.
Top modern
Sangiovese grapes grow on 14 of the 24 hectares of vineyards. But Canaiolo, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay also grow excellently on the Galestro soil typical of Chianti Classico. Johannes has also invested a lot of work in the cellar: The "old" cellar was built in 1972. At that time, however, grapes from around 10 hectares of vines were processed here. With the expansion of the vineyards in 2004, the cellar was also enlarged. Today there is a fermentation cellar with steel tanks and a maturing cellar with barriques - all state-of-the-art. You are welcome to book a guided tour of the wine cellar and wine tasting at Poggio al Sole.
Chianti Classico Casasilia
Poggio al Sole offers eight different wines: five red wines, a rosato called Primavera, which is made from 100 percent Sangiovese, and two white wines - Chiara, a pure Chardonnay, and Sangiovese Bianco, a Blanc de Noir made from Sangiovese grapes. However, as you would expect, the main role is played by the Chianti Classico: 90 percent Sangiovese and 10 percent Canaiolo give this red wine its classic character. A particular highlight is the wine called Casasilia, a Chianti Classico Gran Selezione made from 100 percent Sangiovese, which is undoubtedly the top wine from Poggio al Sole. Interestingly, the name Casasilia is reminiscent of the time when the winery still belonged to the Badia a Passignano Abbey and bore the same name.
Resounding names, elegant wines
The Trittico, Poggio al Sole's 'house wine', combines the Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grape varieties - hence the 'Tri' in the name, which refers to the three grape varieties used. The Syrah IGT, on the other hand, consists, as the name suggests, of 100 percent Syrah grapes. The range is rounded off by the Ponente, which consists of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese that grow on the hill opposite. Poggio al Sole also produces high-quality olive oil - no wonder, given the 1,500 or so shimmering silver-grey olive trees that thrive here."
