Chianti Classico DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino
100 per cent Sangiovese from 100 per cent conviction!
If you look for international grape varieties in the vineyards of the Fattoria Poggerino, it will be difficult to find them. The Sangiovese grows exclusively in the rugged Galestro sites of Poggerino, and just a small proportion of Merlot could be find. Piero Lanza - owner, agronomist and oenologist - is fully convinced of the positive qualities of Sangiovese. That is why you’ll find "solo Sangiovese" and nothing else in Poggerino’s Chianti Classico! The vines for Chianti Classico are between 15 to 25 years old. The grapes are harvested with great care by hand and then fermented in specially shaped cement tanks for about 35 days at a temperature of 28 to 30 degrees. Afterwards, the young wine matures in large oak barrels, with different volumes, from 2,000 to 4,000 liters. Chianti Classico is allowed to absorb the aromas of French oak for 12 months before being bottled and rest and mature for another eight months in the bottle.
Holiday & wine: Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti
Fattoria Poggerino is situated in a small valley, just a few kilometres from the center of Radda in Chianti, on an area of around 43 hectares. The narrow road meanders slowly between the hills until one finally reaches the small road to the winery. The first thing you see from Poggerino are the greenhouses where vegetables are grown. Just as with the wine, the motto here is: everything organic! And the numerous awards for the Poggerino wines and the excellent ratings from wine magazines and connoisseurs show that this is the right thing to do. Organic vegetables also have a lot to offer. For example, Stefano Cutrupi - the man who looks after the gardens here, won Italy’s largest pumpkin award with a mega organic pumpkin weighting 849 kilos made at Poggerino. Benedetta Lanza also conjures with these organic vegetables from time to time a dinner for the guests in the Bed & Breakfast, which should not be missed! All in all the Bed & Breakfast at Poggerino is very familiar. The rooms are beautifully furnished in the typical rustical Tuscan style. And you simply feel at home here - this is pure Tuscany. That is exactly like in your dreams!
Organic red wines with a plus in enjoyment
Basically it would not be wrong to say that at Fattoria Poggerino rules the "Queen Sangiovese" ! After all, the Sangiovese occupies 11 of a total of 12 hectares of cultivated land, and the Merlot has only one from it. Of course, this also results in a pure Sangiovese assortment: on the one hand, there is the Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso, a light and drinkable house wine made from 100 per cent Sangiovese. But "solo Sangiovese" are also the Chianti Classico, the Chianti Classico Riserva with the sounding name Bugialla and the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo, which matures in a man-high, approximately 650 litre cement egg. Primamateria is the super tuscan wine in the range - and the only Poggerino wine with 50:50 ratio from Merlot and Sangiovese. Poggerino also produces a Rosato called Aurora, a spumante also made from one hundred per cent Sangiovese, and an extra virgin olive oil. For Piero Lanza, the owner of Poggerino, it is more than evident that the vineyards and gardens at Poggerino should cultivated according to organic principles. He is convinced that the wine will be good only if the land, the soil and the environment are treated in the right way.
A Tuscan vineyard with noble roots
The owners of the Fattoria Poggerino in Radda in Chianti are the siblings Benedetta and Piero Lanza. The mother of Piero and Benedetta, Contessa Floriana, who comes from the old Florentine noble family Prince Ginori Conti, inherited the vineyard from her father in the 70s. Together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, Floriana began in 1980 for the first time to produce a Chianti Classico under the Poggerino label. Since 1999 the property has been owned by their two children Piero and Benedetta. Since Piero is an agronomist and oenologist, he takes care of the vineyard - from the smallest seedling to the grapes to the bottle. Benedetta’s kingdom is the Bed and Breakfast. When it comes to the organisation and processing of reservations and orders, the two are supported by John Spratt, who is always available to answer any questions or concerns.

Folgt man von Radda in Chianti kommend der kleinen Straße mit der schlichten Bezeichnung „Strada Provinziale 72“, die sich sanft durch die Hügel schlängelt, gelangt man nach einigen Minuten Fahrt zur Einfahrt der Fattoria Poggerino. Vorbei an den Weinkellern kommt man schließlich zum Tasting Room, der gleichzeitig auch als Büro fungiert. Hier wird man meistens von John begrüßt, der sich auf Poggerino ums Organisatorische kümmert. Von der Zimmerreservierung im Bed & Breakfast über die Abwicklung von Weinbestellungen aus aller Welt bis hin zur Begrüßung der Gäste.
Denn die Inhaber der Fattoria Poggerino sind die oft unterwegs: Piero Lanza, der Agronom und Önologe in einer Person ist, ist rumpelt entweder mit seinem Mazda-Pick-up durch die Weinberge oder er tüftelt und feilt im Weinkeller an seinen Weinen. Benedetta, Pieros Schwester und Miteigentümerin von Poggerino, werkt im Bed & Breakfast, das in einem Gebäude aus dem 18. Jahrhundert untergebracht ist. Hier gibt es immer was zu tun – und manchmal kocht Benedetta auch für die Gäste. Ein Genuss der Extraklasse, den man sich nicht entgehen lassen darf. Vieles von dem, was dabei auf den Tisch kommt, wächst und gedeiht direkt in den Gemüsegärten von Poggerino. Dafür verantwortlich: Stefano, der Piero außerdem in Keller und Berg zur Hand geht. Übrigens: Dieser Mann ist Italiens Kürbis-König. Denn er hat mit einem Gewicht von unglaublichen 849 Kilo Italiens größten Kürbis gezüchtet.
Eichen-Fass oder Zement-Ei: Rotweine zum Verlieben!
Auf 11 von 12 Hektar Rebfläche der Fattoria Poggerino wächst Sangiovese, auf nur einem Hektar Merlot. Mit der Konsequenz, dass das Sortiment sehr Sangiovese-lastig, dabei aber trotzdem abwechslungsreich ist. Natürlich sind da zuallererst der Chianti Classico und die Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla – beide zu 100 Prozent Sangiovese. Eine Besonderheit ist sicher der zweite Chianti Classico (N)Uovo. Besonders insofern, als dieser Wein nicht im Fass, sondern in einem überdimensionalen Ei aus Zement, das ein Fassungsvermögen von ca. 650 Litern hat, heranreift. Und dann gibt es noch den Il Labirinto Toscana Rosso, den trinkfreudigen Hauswein. (N)Uovo und Labirinto übrigens ebenfalls „solo Sangiovese“. Der einzige Poggerino-Wein, für den die Trauben der internationalen Rebsorte Merlot zum Einsatz kommen, ist der Primamateria – der Supertuscan im Sortiment. Ebenfalls im Sortiment finden sich der Rosato Aurora, ein 100%iger Sangiovese-Spumante sowie ein Olivenöl extra vergine. Und ganz nebenbei erwähnt: Alles bio, versteht sich. Das ist Piero ein großes Anliegen.
