Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla DOCG from Fattoria Poggerino
Sounding name, delicious wine!
Just like most of the wines from Poggerino the Chianti Classico Riserva with the sounding nickname "Bugialla" is made 100 per cent from Sangiovese. As usually for a Riserva, only the best grapes are used for it. And in this case the grapes are coming from vines planted in 1973 by Piero’s mother - the Contessa Floriana. The vinification takes place in large cement tanks at a temperature of 27 to 30 degrees for 55 days - which is relatively long compared to other red wines of the same range. The wine is then aged for 18 months in Slavonian oak barrels with a capacity of around 2,000 liters. After bottling, the wine is left to mature for at least another year in the bottle. And apropos this sounding name: "Bugialla" is actually the name of a place at Poggerino situated above the parcels where the grapes for the Riserva grow. And there is still a Romanesque church at this place today. For this reason Piero and Benedetta decided to give their Riserva this name.
Fattoria Poggerino: organic red wines from Radda in Chianti
Bugialla is of course a special wine in the Poggerino range. But the Chianti Classico (N)Uovo is also outstanding. Why? Because it is matured in a 650 liter, man-high cement egg instead of the usual wooden barrel. This is on the one hand an innovation - something new or "nuovo" - and on the other hand a wine from an egg - from a "uovo". This exact combination gives the 100 per cent Sangiovese red wine its name. Besides this special Chianti Classico there is also the "normal" Chianti Classico from Poggerino - as normal as an excellent wine can be. Another wine in the portfolio is the Il Labirinto IGT, the young wild one in Poggerino’s range, which is also 100 per cent Sangiovese. And last but not least is the "Primamateria" - the super tuscan. The little Merlot grapes that grow on Poggerino are used for it and are mixed half-half with Sangiovese. Poggerino also produces a Rosato called "Aurora", a spumante also made from one hundred per cent Sangiovese, and an extra virgin olive oil. By the way everything is completely organic! Piero attaches great importance to working in harmony with nature.
The success factors for outstanding Chianti Classico
But why are Poggerino wines so special? And why does Piero focus his attention on the autochthonous Sangiovese grape variety? There are several reasons for this: one of them is the location of the vineyards. The steep slopes open to the southwest, just like the pages of an open book. Now you might think that the Sangiovese is getting too hot. But it is not since the Poggerino sites are surrounded by forests. After a hot sunny day, they provide the nightly cooling like an air conditioner. In other words, the grapes produce sugar in the sun during the day but can cool down at night and the fresh fruit aromas remain intact. Another reason why Sangiovese thrives so well here is the Galestro soil - in the case of Poggerino very rugged fragmented shale. Success factor number three is the altitude. In total, the vineyards of Poggerino cover an area of 12 hectares - 11 hectares are planted at an altitude of 400 to 500 metres with Sangiovese and one hectare with the international Merlot grape variety. And finally, it is the combination of climate, soil and altitude that forms the basis for the production of wines of the highest quality. In addition, Piero is firmly convinced that organic farming supports the soil and plants by giving the wines even more independence and character. Good for the environment - good for Chianti Classico - good for wine lovers.
Benedetta & Piero Lanza: two for wonderful wine & wonderful holidays
While Piero, agronomist and oenologist, takes care of everything to do with wine, his sister Benedetta lovingly runs the Bed & Breakfast, part of the winery, which is housed in an 18th century building. Simply a wonderful place to spend your holidays. With a pool surrounded by a beautiful green garden, with beautiful rooms furnished in typical rustical Tuscan style, where you simply feel at home. Benedetta is an excellent cook, by the way. And from time to time she also prepares dinner for the guests. Do you have any other plans for any of those nights? Then forget them immediately! You will not regret it. You should not miss a Benedetta dinner!

Fattoria Poggerino
