Podcast 008 | A colorful conversation with Piero Lanza from the Poggerino winery

Piero Lanza

Poggerino | Radda in Chianti

Today I would like to take you on a trip to beautiful Chianti, more precisely to Radda, where I visited Piero Lanza at his Poggerino winery. Poggerino is located just a few minutes from the center of Radda in an idyllic valley. When you turn off the road to the winery, you are immersed in another world. It's hard to describe, but Poggerino has a very special spirit that immediately captivates you.

During my visit, I talked to Piero about many topics that make the heart of every wine lover beat faster. Piero is not only an excellent winemaker, but also a passionate weather observer. His knowledge of the climatic changes in the region is impressive and contributes significantly to the quality of his wines.

We sat on the terrace of his new tasting room, which was only completed last spring. This room is perfectly equipped for tasting Poggerino's many wines, whether indoors or outdoors. Piero's sister Benedetta, who is known for her cooking skills, prepares simple dishes that go perfectly with the wines.

A special terroir

During our conversation, we had a glass of Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla in front of us. Bugialla is the name of the vineyard and an old church from the 12th century that stands on the site. The wine, made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, is aged for two years in large Slavonian oak barrels and has an incredible ageing potential of up to 25 years.

Poggerino covers around 43 hectares, of which 12 hectares are planted with vines. The combination of altitude, stony soil and surrounding forests creates a unique terroir that makes Piero's wines so special. The forests ensure cool nights, which benefits the complexity and elegance of the wines. Poggerino is a family business and Piero works closely with other winemakers in Radda to constantly improve the quality of the wines. Sustainability is also very important to him, which is why the winery has been certified organic for over 15 years.

Concrete egg - A special method of winemaking

Piero talks about his work at Poggerino, his philosophy in the vineyard and wine cellar. A very special feature of Poggerino is the so-called "concrete egg", in which Piero produces a very special Chianti Classico. In this episode, you can find out directly from Piero what this is all about and why the wine in it is so special.

The challenges of the weather

And when Piero Lanza and Nina meet in Chianti, it's always about the weather. Definitely no small talk. Piero is intensively involved with the weather and its consequences. He swears by working WITH nature and the weather - because, according to Piero, this is a very important key to great wine quality.
